You're at home, I'm away
And if all I can say
Is that this boy is still the same
It's the man inside that's changed
Front of the line but still behind
Seems like I'm trying way too hard
And like I haven't tried at all
Hard as stone but feeling all the weight
Feeling all the weight that's crushing me
When you come around
You're like a little slice of heaven when I'm coming down
Lifting me up above the clouds

I'll sleep tonight but the war's far from over
Tomorrow is no guarantee
If I don't return from this life of a soldier
Don't you be crying for me.

Throw this all away
Nothing comes for free at least that's what they say
If I had the chance I'd do it all again
If I had the chance I'd do it all again
Racing against the clock trying to relieve the pressure
Pushing you away so we can be together
Carry me today I'll carry you forever
Let's take a chance and we'll see if this won't last
Hard as a stone but feeling all the weight
Feeling all the weight that's crushing me
When you come around
You're like a little slice of heaven when I'm coming down
Lifting me up above the clouds.

I'll sleep tonight but the war's far from over
Tomorrow is no guarantee
If I don't return from this life of a soldier
Don't you be crying for me.

There's a car pulling up and the man who's inside
Takes a deep breath as he straightens his tie
It's nothing new cause he's done this before
She knew it as soon as he knocked on the door
Please someone please tell me I must be dreaming
What will I do oh, I just can't believe it
Taken away, oh he's
Taken away
Someone take me away
Someone take me away.

I'll sleep tonight but the war's far from over
Tomorrow is no guarantee
If I don't return from this life of a soldier
Don't you be crying for me.

Nothing comes for free at least that's what the say
If I had the chance I'd do it all again

I hope these are the right lyrics, sorry if they are not.

I think this is speaking in both a literal and figurative sense.

I hope you can figure out the literal sense on your on. But in case you can't I'll try to explain what I think it means anyways.

A person goes to war, and is saying to his family and friends that if he doesn't make it home, don't cry for him, it was his choice to go to war, and if he had a second chance, he'd go to war again anyways.

Figuratively, I think this song could be about dealing with depression.

I'll sleep tonight but the war's far from over

He will sleep at night, try to forget about his problems and depressions, make light of the situation, but the war inside himself is not ending anytime soon, and he's a long way from happiness.

    Tomorrow is no guarantee

Tomorrow is no guarantee that he will be any happier, that everything will be better... etc.

If I don't return from this life of a soldier

I think this could be about... well... suicide. If he doesn't return to what his personality was before depression, he might kill himself. Saying like if he doesn't return from his life of battling his inner demons, he will have died.

Don't you be crying for me.

He's begging people not to cry for him, it was his choice and they shouldn't feel bad.

I actually think it leans more so towards the actual literal war theory because of the verses too, but the depression theory fits in nice with the chorus.

    Song rules.

I really do like this song. First time i heard it i really didn't know what was going on, but it still caught my attention. Went back, and looked at what was really being said.. And yeah I gotta agree, seems to lean more towards actually being a soldier at war.

Only 3 comments? I thought this was the most popular illscarlett song? And also why does it say the comments were made in weird years like 1633 and 9486?

I love this song. I agree with fallen leaves... in the video they are climbing hills and carrying huge backpacks, which doesn't really have anything to do with war so really it only goes to prove it's a metaphor... I like the video though, it sets a good environment. I am prolly wrong though... Where it says:

"There's a car pulling up and the man who's inside Takes a deep breath as he straightens his tie It's nothing new cause he's done this before She knew it as soon as he knocked on the door "

It sounds like he could be someone coming to deliver the bad news...

For some reason I used to think this had something to do with drug abuse... I guess because of the "coming down", "lifting me above the clouds" parts and the general theme... Sorry if I ruined the song for you :/

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

“Head > Heels” is a track that aims to capture what it feels like to experience romance that exceeds expectations. Ed Sheeran dedicates his album outro to a lover who has blessed him with a unique experience that he seeks to describe through the song’s nuanced lyrics.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
