I was locked all day in the summer heat
In a small brown house in suburban streets
With a skateboard and my shit guitar
I dreamed all day that they would get me far
My dad would ask me about my grades
The asshole sports that I never played
And then I'd ask about the girls he'd date
Behind our backs when mom had stayed up late
It was near when I turned sixteen
Got kicked out of school and so it seemed
Things were closing in and ready to blow
My dad moved out about that year or so
It took an hour to start a punk rock band
To upset my fucked up family land
And as I held my mum would start to cry
I swore ourselves, a better life

If I had a chance for another try
I wouldn't change a thing
This made me all on who I am inside
And if I could thank God
That I am here, and that I am alive
And everyday I wake
I tell myself a little harmless lie
The whole wide world is mine

The summers gone, the years have passed
My friends have changed, a few did last
The smallest dreams got pushed aside
The largest ones that changed my life
And all I wish for has come to pass
From rock and roll, to love and cash
It's all success if it's what you need
Do what you like and do it honestly

If I had a chance for another try
I wouldn't change a thing
This made me all on who I am inside
And if I could thank God
That I am here and that I am alive
And everyday I wake
I tell myself a little harmless lie
The whole wide world is mine

Hey oh oh oh
Hey oh oh
Hey oh oh oh
Hey oh oh
Hey oh oh oh
Hey oh oh
Hey oh oh oh
Hey oh oh

If I had a chance for another try
I wouldn't change a thing
This made me all on who I am inside
And if I could thank God
That I am here, and that I am alive
And everyday I wake
I tell myself a little harmless lie
The whole wide world is mine (the whole wide world is mine)
If I had a chance for another try
I wouldn't change a thing
This made me all on who I am inside (the whole wide world is mine)
And if I could thank God
That I am here, and that I am alive (the whole wide world is mine)
And everyday I wake
I tell myself a little harmless lie (the whole wide world is mine)
The whole wide world is mine

You pretty much nailed it wearysaint08. I'm just going to show everyone how it did relate to Mr. Thomas Delonge for those who do not know him.

"I was locked all day in the summer heat, In a small brown house in Suburban Streets, My skateboard and my shit guitar, I dreamed all day that they would get me far,"

Meaning:: Tom lived in California, so it was hot most of the time. Also he got his first guitar at the age of 15 for painting his house, which he happened to paint brown. He was also big into skateboarding at this time. As the lyrics say, he wished they took him far.

"My dad would ask me about my grades, The asshole sports that I never played. And then I'd ask about the girls he'd date, Behind our backs when mom would stay up late. "

Meaning:: Tom & his dad never had a good relationship status. He never played any sports going through highschool so his dad would always look down upon his because of that. Tom knew his dad was cheating on his mom, which lead to a farther relationship from eachother.

"It was near when I turned sixteen, got kicked out of school, And so it seemed, things were closing in And ready to blow, My dad moved out about that year or so, And talked in hours start a punk rock band To offset my fucked up family land And as I held my mom would start to cry I swore ourselves a better life"

Meaning::Tom did get kick out from his junior prom at the age of 16 for showing up intoxicated. About at the same time his dad moved out. Stressed from everything in his life he created the band "Duct tape", which is who are now known by most as "Blink-182". After creating "Blink-182" he swore to change his life"

"If I had a chance for another try, I wouldn't change a thing This made me all on who I am inside And if I could thank god That I am here, and that I am alive And everyday I wake I tell myself a little harmless lie The whole wide world is mine"

Meaning:: the first two lines are talking about not just Blink-182 and their break up but about his entire life. Even though he had some extremely rough times he wouldn't change a think because now he is happy and at peace finally. He thanks God for what has happened to him, and he realized as long as hes happy thats all that matter.

"The summers gone, the years have passed, My friends have changed, a few did last, The smallest dreams got pushed aside, The largest ones that changed my life, "

Meaning:: He first starts off by stating how time has past. The friends he says that changed are indeed Mark Hoppus & Travis Barker, the one who have last are David Kennedy and others. The small dreams he talks about is Blink-182. When they broke up his reasons were that he wanted to have more Family time which is the largest dream. So he pushed Blink-182 aside for his family.

"And all I wish for was come to past From rock and roll, to love and cash It's all success if it's what you need Do what you like and do it honestly"

Meaning:: This talks about how his dream of his guitar taking him far actually came true. He got what he needed and explains how all you need is the determination to do what you want to do. He also says that if you are going to go through with it do it honestly. I personally believe this was for Mark & Travis, about how they took the brreaking up of Blink-182 and blammed it on Tom. Saying that he has changed drasticly. He says do it honestly because he wanted the truth from them."

Overal:: This song tells the story of his life and how he went from rags to riches. I also believe this song is to tell both Mark & Travis how even though hes not still with them in Blink-182 hes doing fine without them and he does in fact his them, but doesn't regreat what he did.

"just a great story for a phenomenal song."

I agree, but notice this story involves Blink. [:

"It took me hours to start a punk rock band" There we go with the Blink[:

"If I had a chance for another try, I wouldn't change a thing"

He's obv. not regretting Blink, but he's happy in AVA.

Just simple meanings behind this song rly.

Well, I think it should be noted that Tom was also kicked out of school for drinking at a school function. I think the song is connecting somehow to his life and experiences. As pointed out there's a obvious show to blink-182

Hiro99, buddy, this song isn't "somehow connected to his life and experience."

This song is his life and experience. This is a beautiful song. But don't even dare try to find some deep meaning inside the obvious. This is him looking at his life. It has shitty times and amazing times. He regrets and wouldn't change any of them.

He got kicked out of school for showing up drunk to a basketball game from what some sources tell me.

But that cant be it, u dont get kicked out of school for something like that so there had to be more stuff involved...

I personally find it interesting how now, after having released a (poopy compared to this) album that he decides to indirectly mention Blink-182: the most epic band to ever exist.

But here's another question that I would like a response to: How would you feel if he mentioned Blink in WDNTW rather than I-Empire? How would you're thoughts about DeLonge have changed if he did in WDNTW?

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
