Didn't they teach you?
Everything's okay if you settle enough.
Forget your dreams.
Let's pretend I'm everything you want me to be.

Complicated breathing.
You never had the guts just to throw me away.
Life moves slow
when everything's a worse version of what you need.

And I'm just the ground
that you happened to fall on
when you lost your balance
walking around in the rain.

And you got to your feet
scratched your head
and started to gather
the life that you dropped
all around me.

I can't fight for a graveyard anymore.

Some people have their money
to keep their legs pumping away at the ground.
What moves me is fear,
that I'll always be alone at the end of the day.

this is one of my favorite songs. :)

but i think he's trying to say that he's in love with this person but they only seem to come back after things fail with someone else.

"you never had the guts to just throw me away"

she always comes back to him, cause its probably comfort in knowing he will always be there if it doesnt work out with someone else.

but then even though he loves her, he finally says i can't fight for a graveyard anymore. meaning that he doesnt want to fight for someone who has no real feelings for him

i think it's about this guy that always seems to be the fall back guy to a girl. he loves her so he allows it to happen. but eventually he gets fed up with it, since the girl doesnt have real feelings for him "i cant fight for a graveyard anymore' = dead feelings? and even though he's letting it go, he's still afraid to be alone. or to be without her.

i think he's in love with a girl who isn't satisfied with just him. she's always needing more and he doesn't complete her. she puts other things before him and she basically doesn't feel the same way he does.

I always thought it was about a girl fucking with this guy, he's in love with her but she doesn't have any real feelings for him, but she still stays with him and It's killing him.

I've always took it as to be about a girl who just settles with a guy she's not completely interested in because she wants to spare his feelings. But he knows her feelings aren't as strong as his and that she wants to leave.

"And I'm just the ground that you happened to fall on when you lost your balance walking around in the rain."

I think that's saying she only got together with him in the first place because she just got out of a bad relationship and/or was going through a rough time, and he was there.

"And you got to your feet scratched your head and started to gather the life that you dropped all around me."

But after a while, she realizes she wants and needs more. But she doesn't want to hurt him, so instead she stays. Meanwhile, the guy knows all of this and, like pansyisdabomb said, it's killing him.

This song is my life, compiled into a few paragraphs.

"Didn't they teach you? Everything's okay if you settle enough. Forget your dreams. Let's pretend I'm everything you want me to be." She dreams of having the perfect boyfriend, but he wants her to settle for him.

"Complicated breathing. You never had the guts just to throw me away." Despite his imperfections, she couldn't bring herself to say goodbye.

"Life moves slow when everything's a worse version of what you need." The opposite of 'time flies when you're having fun'.

"And I'm just the ground that you happened to fall on when you lost your balance walking around in the rain." She was lost and confused (hence 'the rain', because it's hard to see), and when she finally fell, he was there for her, even though he wasn't the person she needed then.

"And you got to your feet scratched your head and started to gather the life that you dropped all around me." She dropped all her troubles at him, her life, in an attempt to make sense of it.

"I can't fight for a graveyard anymore." He can't fight for something that's already dead (their relationship).

"Some people have their money to keep their legs pumping away at the ground. What moves me is fear, that I'll always be alone at the end of the day." All some people want in life is money, but all he wants is someone to love, and that's what keeps him going.

(Psst. This isn't the whole song.)

It's about being the best friend when you really want to be so much more. You're there when she needs you and then when she's collected again, you're completely invisible. And eventually you just get tired for fighting for something that will never happen anyway.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
