Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na

I was heading down to Spring Street
With a suitcase in my hand
And filled with love and life and grand delusions
I knew you'd understand

When I left you by the stairwell
And your eyes were wet with tears
Mother, you knew you had to let me go
Even after all these years

(And we sing)
Na na na na na na na
(And she said)
Na na na na na na na
(And walk on)
Na na na na na na na
(You're alright)
Na na na na na na na

And I found myself a new life
And I've been living with some friends
And we hold on to dreams and live like kings
Like the days will never end

And I left him by the statue
And his eyes were filled with tears
Lover you knew you had to let me go
Even after all these years

(And we sing)
Na na na na na na na
(And he said)
Na na na na na na na
(We?ll walk on)
Na na na na na na na
(You're alright)
Na na na na na na na

And everything changes
And friends become strangers
And what we hold so dear slips away
The past keeps on fading
But I'll never forget you
It's hard to see that you?re a part of me
Even when we have to say

Na na na na na na na
(And walk on)
Na na na na na na na
(And we sing)
Na na na na na na na
(You're alright)
Na na na na na na na

And I moved out of the city
To start a family of my own
And when I look into my daughter's eyes
And I don't feel so alone
And as I walk her down to Spring Street
And she holds onto my hand
Mother, you knew my eyes would be wet with tears
And now I understand

Na na na
Na na na na na na na
(And I said)
Na na na na na na na
(Walk on)
Na na na na na na na
(And thank you)
Na na na na na na na

And walk on
We're alright
And hold on
Na na na na na na na

It has a prevailing theme of growing older, and leaving family and loved ones behind. She creates a new life for herself, loving her new found freedom.

Everything changes in her life, and once she holds her daughters hands, she realizes the cycle of life.

I definitely agree with the person above me about it being about her daughter.

In the second verse it seems like shes singing about a former lover. And then she sings, "friends become strangers" which could also be about a lost friendship.

So this song to me, is just about losing someone or letting someone go in general not someone in particular.

i think the "na na na na na na na" repitition is about how the words were not important in these situations. Its about the image and the memory that is fading. She can remember the vibe but not the words, which dont matter anyway.

And i agree with the cycle of life. Shows from when she left home, to returning home with her own child, knowing that soon her daughter will leave her and understanding what her mother felt when she left.

    Beautiful song!

This song is so amazing. I've been listening to it for over an hour just on and on.

I think everyone on this page has said some good things, has some good ideas about the lyrics.

To me I think she's talking at first about two loves that she left behind for some reason, to pursure dreams, to escape, ect.

And then someday she had a daughter, (not sure if it's with one of the loves described) but then I think when she had to say goodbye to her daughter or when she came back to the scenes where she left the men, I think she understood how hard it was for them to say goodbye.

I'm not sure if she regrets what she did but I think she finally understands how they all felt when she left them.

I'm not sure of this song.. Like it means kinda' alot. But then.. I'm not sure. Lol And I'm not even sure if I like it. Like, I do. But I don't. Lol I love the...part about the daughter. But I don't like the na na na na na na na stuff. Like it seems weird to me. But I like most of it. Haha

I agree, this song is about growing older and realizing things on your own.

I believe the SoHo area of Manhattan, New York City is the inspiration for many of her song on her "Heroes & Thieves" album. I live on Spring Street.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
