Hi Ho Six Shooter! does a great cover of this song on the 1234 Go Records tribute to the Replacements album.
to me, this song's meaning is that the lead singer wants a girl who doesn't know he exists, or who has a boyfriend or significant other and can't be with him. therefore, he drinks and his life is becoming meaningless.
Wanting to get through loneliness and looking for a ticket out of the lonely life, in the smile of someone you think is awesome. The singer may not even know the person he wants to be his ticket, he's just hoping she's out there.
