First place on a classroom wall
Every turn of the face can help to break
The fall from a domestic disgrace
Every rumor displaced is lost and found

A lack of discipline, one hand to cut the other
So unprofessional
You're not a friend, you're just a lover
Nothing exceptional, this is correctional

Mirror on the wall, frame the picture
Reflect this kiss to wish us all goodnight

First day in a victim's chair
Every surface replaced can help to keep
You fair for a corrected gaze
Every feature displayed will match your crowd

A loss of innocence, one hand to wash the other
Be a perfectionist
You're nothing if you're just another
Something material, this isn't personal

Mirror on the wall, frame the picture
Reflect this kiss to wish us all goodnight

We're all dancing to the same sad song
And we're not sleeping but it won't take long

Illicit conviction, confessions incomplete
Correction, submissive restriction
Instructions will repeat direction

Mirror on the wall, frame the picture
Reflect this kiss to wish us all goodnight

I definitely think you guys are right - this is about a person who is completely neglected from their family life, and so turns to anything they can to get attention - school, rumors, cutting, whatever they can. And while they hate it - they keep putting themselves down with phrases like 'so unprofessional,' 'nothing exceptional,' 'you're nothing if you're just another' - it's the only way they feel like they're doing something right with themselves ('this is correctional.')

The sad thing about this song is that this person obviously has had no one to hold on to and sees themselves as completely worthless and screwed up. The chorus is absolutely heartrending.

'Mirror on the wall Frame the picture. Reflect this kiss to wish us all Goodnight.'

The only picture the mirror can reflect when you're looking into it is your own face. So the 'frame the picture' is almost a bitter jibe at this person's own self esteem, which is found in various places throughout the rest of the song. And the fact is that this person is looking at themselves in a mirror, pretending to kiss themselves goodnight because no one else will ever do it for them. It's a beautiful and breathtaking picture that makes you want to rip yourself up and cry.

My opinion... which could be extremely off, but it's here nonetheless.

I couldn't say what each phrase means individually, but to me it sounds as though it's generally about someone who has a shitty family life and desires attention from her school life and such...

"First place, on a classroom wall Every turn of a face Can help to break the Fall from a domestic disgrace"

It also goes on as the person telling themselves they have to be better, a "perfectionist"- if they don't do well, they'll just become a face in the crowd. Basically, someone thriving for positive attention that their own family can't give.

"Be a perfectionist You're nothing if your just another"

It's about being bullied.. It's a personal thing. I think it's actually about the members being bullied in school. "Goodnight" "we're not sleeping but it won't take long" fit with each other. If it continues maybe they'll be in a sleep forever. But you manage to make it out. But I believe it's about the actually members.

Just what I believe.. I'm obsessed with this band. All the music reaches out to me.. Well most if the newer music. I love all the songs though. Not one song I haven't heard. Great!

Amazing song, Im not sure about the meaning but the latest album is amazing stuff. As was the last, and even the EP. Such a good melody, such good lyrical content.

stargazer1223 I like your idea very much. I think it could be about everyone suffering the same thing from different angles such as a perfectionist or lovers where one wants more out of the relationship and it just isnt possible. Being inferior or mediocre hurts.

It is rumored that the song is about Phantasm which fits because it is about a boy who looses his parents and deals with a bodysnatcher who turns out to be evil or something to that effect. I never saw it, but after reading the plot it makes a lot of sense if they wrote the song around the theme of the plot in the movie.

I believe a few of these lyrics are off...

As far as the meaning goes, I think it's about someone who self harms. They're able to control their performance in school, but at home their life is a mess. Whatever they use to harm themselves is really meaningful to them, but they resent it to a certain extent (friend v. lover). The person is unhappy about being less than amazing and feels a lot of release when they harm themselves. The kiss is symbolic for an act of harm. The surfaces replaced indicate covering up the self harm so that anyone that would try to "help" is unaware of the evidence of injury. The person hasn't gone far enough to kill himself/herself, but they intend to (sleeps is symbolic for suicide).

    I don't think it's about love.. I think it's about 'mass followers'

In the last portion of the song, it isn't "Confusion" but it is "Convection".

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
