You come home late and you come home early
You come on big when you're feeling small
You come home straight and you come home fucked up
Sometimes you don't come home at all

Chorus:
So what in the world's come over you
And what in heaven's name have you done
You've broken the speed of the sound of loneliness
You're out there running just to be on the run

Well I got a heart that burns with a fever
And I got a worried and a jealous mind
How can a love that'll last forever
Get left so far behind

Repeat Chorus:

It's a mighty mean and a dreadful sorrow
It's crossed the evil line today
Well, how can you ask about tomorrow
We ain't got one word to say

Repeat Chorus:

Ending:
You're out there running just to be on the run
You're out there running just to be on the run
You're out there running just to be on the run

General CommentAlabama 3 often does covers, but they're pretty thorough reworkings of the originals. This takes John Prine's Speed of the Sound of Loneliness, and changes it to the first person. So, it goes from being "You come home late, You come home early" to "I come home late, I come home early". "Well I got a heart that burns with a fever, And I got a worried and a jealous mind" becomes "you've got a heart that burns with a fever, you've got a worried and a jealous mind".

Alabama 3 set out to mix country music with acid house and techno. This is a stellar example.

It also works well with the overall theme of the Exile on Cold Harbor Lane album. Larry Love was running just to be on the run, until he met up with D Wayne Love, The Mountain of Love, The Spirit, and the whole First Presleyterian Church of Elvis the Divine (UK).
