Far Away Lyrics

I will live my life as a lobsterman's wife on an island in the blue bay.
He will take care of me, he will smell like the sea,
And close to my heart he'll always stay.

I will bear three girls all with strawberry curls, little Ella and
Nelly and Faye.
While I'm combing their hair, I will catch his warm stare
On our island in the blue bay.

Far away far away, I want to go far away.
To a new life on a new shore line.
Where the water is blue and the people are new.
To another island, in another life.

There's a boy next to me and he never will be anything but a boy at the bar.
And I think he's the tops, he's where everything stops.
How I love to love him from afar.

When he walks right pass me then I finally see on this bar stool I can't stay.
So I'm taking my frown to a far distant town
On an island in the blue bay.
Far away far away, I want to go far away.
To a new life on a new shore line.
Where the water is blue and the people are new.
To another island, in another life.

I want to go far away.
Away away, I want to go far away, away, away
I want to go far away, far away.

Where the water is blue and the people are new.
To another life, to another life.
To another shore line
In another life.

i think this is about two separate people actually, the first woman is one half of the perfect marriage and one fifth of the ideal family but the routine is breaking her down she needs to escape, somewhere far away. still an island in the same blue bay though she knows she needs a change, but too drastic and it all falls apart

the second, a single girl looking for love in all the wrong places when she realizes that the boy she loves "from afar" it's all he cracked up to be up close she knows she needs a change of scenery so she heads far away some place where the boys are what they seem and the waters are a beautiful blue

aw I love this song, my second favorite off the cd (an untitled track), the first being "the hat".

I saw Ingrid in concert a few weeks back, and she explained that her family (i think aunt?) lives in Maine, and Ingrid used to spend time there and pretend she lived there. That was basically the inspiration for this song, and I think she just added in her artistic abilities from there.

I get the feeling that the first verse is her aunt, or someone she knows in Maine, maybe just the stereotypical wife up there, and the rest of the song is Ingrid. All of Ingrid's songs seem to be pretty personal, especially on Girls and Boys, so I wouldn't try to look TOO deep into it all.

i think that the first scene on the blue bay is her ideal life that she is day dreaming about whereas the second scene at the bar is the reality that she is dealing with & at the end of that scene she decides "on this bar stool i cant stay" & decides to follow her dreams & create the life she has imagined in the first scene.

"There's a boy next to me and he never will be anything but a boy at the bar. And I think he's the tops, he's where everything stops. How I love to love him from afar."

When I heard those lines for the first time...wow. Describes my life perfectly.

LOVE this song - quite possibly my fave of Ingrid -- tho she has SO MANY that I love -- but I especially like this one because of the beautiful imagery this song exudes - it's as if I can actually see what she's talking about and it looks beautiful -- great song to go with my daydreaming ;-)
