It Don't Matter to Me Lyrics
If you really feel that
You need sometime to be free
Time to go out searching for yourself
Hoping to find time to go to find
If you take up with someone
Who's better than me
cause your happiness is all I want
For you to find peace your piece of mind
cause they want to be the only one
How many came before it really doesn't matter
Just as long as you're the last
Everybody's moving on and try to find out
Whats been missing in the past
If your searching brings you back together with me
cause there'll always be
An empty room waiting for you
An open heart waiting for you
Time is on my side
cause it don't matter to me
It don't matter to me....

He’s being brave, speaking ironically. His girlfriend has just asked for space, possibly to meet others. He says fine, it doesn’t matter…whatever you want.
But the third verse clearly reveals his true feelings. It DOES matter to him. The repeated third verse is plaintive, almost manic…”there'll always be an empty room…an open heart…”
And the biggest reveal: “Time is on my side.” He wants her back. He can wait, because nothing else is important to him. It does matter.
[Edit: Typo]

hes letting someone go because he loves her so much he wants her to be happy. Hes hoping if he gives her time and freedom shell come back

I wasn't even born when this song was released but it is such a nice song...it's message is pretty simple no explanation needed..
@mcroy76 Then why doesn't anyone get it if it's so simple. People still have that ego-hang-up and want to be the only one....though it isn't right. Love should not be restricted.

Bread is such a great classic 70s pop group, but at the same time they transcend pop, because their songs are almost all very melancholy. Their music is a lot like Nick Drake's in some ways, it's very easy to listen to, very easy to get (much easier to process than Nick Drake's... which is an acquired taste, I think) but it's emotionally complex while being intellectually simple. It's spiritually complex while being philosophically simple. Your mind is not so much at work as your heart.

Let's see. Written by David Gates in 1969. He didn't go to war. Many of his friends didn't do so well with the magic spinning wheel of Vietnam service (for the attuned, that's another hint) Hmmm. What makes y'all think this song has to be about a chick? Ever read the lyrics to Danny Boy? Not all songs are about chicks. Some men go to war and don't come back. (oh, and read Ulysses by James Joyce so you know what a novel is for)
