"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
Everybody cares, everybody understands
Yes everybody cares about you
Yeah and whether or not you want them to
It's a chemical embrace that kicks you in the head
To a pure synthetic sympathy that infuriates you totally
And a quiet lie that makes you want to scream and shout
So here I lay dreaming looking at the brilliant sun
Raining it's guiding light upon everyone
For a moment's rest you can lean against the banister
After running upstairs again and again
From wherever they came to fix you in
But always fear the city's finest follow right behind
You got a pretty vision in your head
A pencil full of poison lead
And a sickened smile illegal in every town
So here I lay dreaming looking at the brilliant sun
Raining its guiding light upon everyone
Here I lay dreaming looking at the brilliant sun
Raining its guiding light upon everyone
You say you mean well, you don't know what you mean
Fucking ought to stay the hell away from things you know nothing about
Yes everybody cares about you
Yeah and whether or not you want them to
It's a chemical embrace that kicks you in the head

The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
I wouldn't say "early demo" is the most fitting description.
yeah, not exactly a demo there.
i actually prefer the live version of this that i have, there's a certain quality to his voice that's different and almost urgent-sounding. and i love the twelve-stepping-cop thing. this version's more angry than the album version.
and i have some corrections. i think these are right, if not, oh well. correct me. -"and it isn't a real offense, you see" -"with two of fear city's finest..." -"and for you, twelve-stepping cop, to not find out"
but as to what it means...i think this version expresses the meaning much more blatantly. and that's partially what makes it sound angrier and it's also part of why i like it better. it's about people thinking they know what's best for you and not being open to other options. i think the sun is basically like people and their opinions? they're lazy because they think there's one solution to your problems, and they're pushy with it. and the "you're the one who's bringing it all about" part is basically saying that if you hadn't gotten into this situation, you wouldn't have these people forcing their methods onto you, like the "twelve-stepping cop" thing which basically speaks for itself.
yeah, not exactly a demo there.
I would classify it as a demo, sure it's sounds the same as the album version just with different lyrics. Its isn't a live recording and it hasn't been released.
I classify any studio track that has leaked and not be released as a demo. This fits that description.
