Rain spat in my face, thanks a lot, mate
And I lost a tenner on the way
Thinkin' about it, did I spend it last night
When I was drunk and I wanted to get more drunk?

Missed the train, thanks a lot, mate
I didn't wanna be late today, 'cause I'm always late
And I really hate always bein' late
And now the other train is delayed, great

Carrier bags and a navy taxi, man said
"Take your time, love 'cause you don't have to rush
'Cause it's your life and it's no one else's, sweetheart
Don't let someone put you in a box"

So I take all that other stuff that I said before
And I'm gonna make it work
Because I'm losin' my mind
And it's drivin' me up the wall

So I tried to help you carry your shoppin'
But I wasn't concentratin', I was talkin'
And I got it caught on the side of this thing
And it split

And I'd try to help you walk along
But I'd probably end up pushin' you over
But don't worry, I'll never let you fall

And I'm stubborn and I'll shout
And I'll cut you out
And I'll, I'll make you feel
Like I never wanted to make you feel

And I'm stubborn and I'll shout
And I'll cut you out
And I'll, I'll make you feel
Like I never wanted to make you feel

Carrier bags and a navy taxi, man said
"Take your time, love 'cause you don't have to rush
'Cause it's your life and it's no one else's, sweetheart
Don't let someone put you in a box"

So I take all that other stuff that I said before
And I'm gonna make it work
Because I'm losin' my mind
And it's drivin' me up the wall

And this time, it will be different
This time, yeah, it will be different
This time, yeah, it will be different

And this time, yeah, it will be different
This time, yeah, it will be different
This time, yeah, it will be different

And this time, yeah, it will be different
This time, yeah, it will be different
This time, it will be different

I feel like this song is about trying to do things to be a good person or trying to meet the expectations of everyone else. The singer tries to be punctual, she attempts to help people out, but something always goes wrong. Like the person before me said, she has great intentions, but sometimes shit happens. The singer is getting frustrated with her life because it seems like she can't do anything right, but then a guy tells her to take it easy and live her own life. She takes that advice to heart. Instead of always trying to do things the "right" way, or be the way everyone expects her to be, she starts to be who she wants to be. The repeated line at the end "This time, it will be different" is her way of saying that she's going to turn her life around. All the shit she complained about in the beginning will no longer bother her; she's gonna do what she can to accept the fact that everyone fucks up now and then. But this time around, everything will be better, because instead of living inside of societies box of expectations, she's finally gonna live life for herself.

This song is great. She speaks (sings, I guess) of so many different things, it almost seems disjointed, but that just makes it seem even more like the sort of interior monologue any one could have.

I actually think it's about a relationship that's going really badly and how she's waking up and having an awful day and she's always late for work because they're always fighting...but she's becoming determined to have things change...

I think this might be my fave song of hers. It's so beautiful and one you can just kinda relate to. Ya know? Wake up and everything goes wrong and then you decide to not only make your day go better but your life better. At least I can relate to it.

its like she has all these good intentions, they just never quite work out. i dunno, its sweet though and the taxi driver is so lovely i love what he says ""Take your time love 'Cause you don't have to rush 'Cause it's your life and it's no one else's, sweetheart Don't let someone put you in a box." so true and people need to be reminded of this once in a while.

This song speaks really strongly to me. I believe it's about someone who keeps screwing up at everything she does, be it making it to work on time or carrying shopping bags. She feels like she's letting everyone down, but despite her self she keeping ruining things. She's stubborn and hot tempered and says things she doesn't mean. It's like she thinks people are losing faith in her, hence the "don't worry, I'll never let you fall". The taxi driver tells her that she doesn't have to live her life trying to please others, and that she needs to slow down and be her own person. At the end of the song, her "this time it will be different" speaks of her resolve to start fresh and change her ways, to live up the the expectations set by others and herself. However, I get the feeling that this is a mantra she's told herself many times already, and it never seems to work.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
