This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
Not always right
Just give me time to fight
Need to think a little more
So I'll know what I'm fighting for
Don't give me your poison pill
A bigger needs to fill
and your sock wont stop the bleeding
I need a little time for a selfish resolution
A shoulder the soft will beat down
A hold is what I need
For this turn into the river and watch it feed
It moves on but is not forgotten
Hold me up when I collapse
but don't build me a coffin
This old weight hold me down
Break me down
Step Around me, ignore me
Until you need me
Wait for me
Re-wrap my cocoon
A devolution
Crawl inside the womb
A devolution
Tradin' old for new
A devolution
Scream, kick, fall, trip
Devolve into the reverse of you
History is too soon for you
Like all the battles that you've waged
Or will I always be tainted
Turns out your a fraction of me
Looked like a fantasy
And hard to recognize by looking in your eyes
You're someone else entirely
To ignore me and
Get back, get back to me
Can I be me without you?
Re-wrap my cocoon
A devolution
Crawl inside the womb
A devolution
Tradin' old for new
A devolution
Scream, kick, fall, and trip
Devolve into the reverse
You and I
Might blur the line
Leave behind
Hate you I love you
Still I walk within mine
Always one step rewind
I hate you I love you
Now I've had enough, I've had enough
Re-wrap my cocoon
A devolution
Crawl inside the womb
A devolution
Tradin' old for new
A devolution
Scream, kick, fall, trip
Devolve into the reverse of you
of you, of you
Just give me time to fight

I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example:
"'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
