Well this entire album is about death and coming to terms with it! This song i think is about those few moments before one dies. I think Tom is trying to tell someone that theres nothing to fear, that death is natural, that you should be smiling cos youve had a good innings and that your loved one is here to hold your hand. Could this particular song be about death in accidents? Road Accidents!

People do this, I think its quiet awful. Something happens on the road and people dont concentrate on anything else but trying to catch a glimpse of the injured. People have been known to take pictures!!! Is this song trying to look at this in a different way? That people are trying to see this thing happen, were someone goes upto heaven (or wherever you believe) as if they start a journey to a new life and people are trying to witness that journey!
Editors are a very underrated band which I stupidly wrote-off at first. However, I do love their music and find their lyrics very poignant and philosophical. It's good when bands aren't ashamed to be called pretentious. I particularly like this out of all their songs. I don't know why.
I'm very excited about seeing them supporting R.E.M. in August.
Someone who has just died (in a car accident, as has been said) watching over his loved one from the afterlife, becoming sort of metaphorical/actual guardian angel.
"If I lay, face down..would you walk all over me" This makes me think of someone letting another treat them bad(abuse) and not doing anything about it.
"Have we learned what we set out to learn.." Not learning from your mistake of letting people walk over you, and just accepting it. Like being in an abusive relationship and not doing anything about it.
"Now don't drown in your tears.." This sounds like it comes from the abuser...just giving that person a bit of hope-that they do love them really-but the person is still down and being abused.
"If you fall..."Reminds me of someone trying to escape, but it's pointless, because that abusive person will always find them.
"But I will tear the prize...."Again, someone promised that they would keep them safe, but instead "There's people climbing out..."so they are dead. Maybe emotionally, from the abuse.
Probably way off! but that's just what it said to me :) Really love this song!
