I think this song is about a guy lurking around a girl and he promises danger and excitement. He's left notes and possibly killed her pet? The way Steve sings this song gets me. It's still sexy and romantic despite the pet line. He performs the hell out of this.

I think it is about a stalker who is terrorizing a television personality who already has a boyfriend.

"My present to you The sweetest tattoo Collapsing hearts in reddest blue" (He got a tattoo in honor of her.)

You will be scared by signs on your pillow He's not you man, no! (Her boyfriend is cheating on her.)

The poems I wrote revealing the code To my thoughts which help to note That I realized your deepest desire (He wrote songs about her and he knows her too well even though she doesn't know him.)

Pick up the phone, enjoy the unknown (He wants her to call him and maybe spend some time with this mysterious man.)

Your smile on tv means nothing to me 'Cause you are all you could be (She's an entertainer, and maybe has a (fake) happiness towards her viewers, but he knows the real her.)

And I feel sorry 'bout the death of your pet! (He cares about her and what makes her sad maybe, or could be something else.)

The end is near We're dying here (Life is too short to be doing something that makes you unhappy or being with someone who makes you sad.)

Always always Enjoy the unknown Creep around your window (Could mean "creep" as a verb meaning get out of your room and explore what's on the other side of your window. OR "creep" as a noun as in a person who is maybe a little mysterious or creepy in a way. Not sure on that one.)
