This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart

Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. i know with me, i let love go, i got as far away from it before i could get too close, or in too deep. in a way i was trying to protect myself from losing him or feeling too much pain, because if i let go then maybe i could feel nothing rather than feeling like i lost him, i think this only hurts you more. because love is love, no matter how strong, it hurts to have it taken away, aswell as having the pain of thinking "what if?, what if i never left?, could it have lasted forever, could i have never hurt at all?"

i think this means your heart, or you, will subconciously always try to protect itself, keeping itself away from love to keep it away from pain, it will keep you from getting in too deep, but you will never know what could have been, or how much you will end up hurting in the end, you just wont know unless you let yourself love.

maybe this is saying she fell in love with this idea, but realized she was getting to attached, in too deep, and like her heart, she let it go, she let it go away. but she would never know what could have become of it, and by the time she sees the beauty it pocessed, it was already gone. it was somebody elses. you love, you lose, you learn. but you can love again, and this time youll know, this time your heart will know.
