In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. sorry, accidently deleted some of that, I meant to say: I agree, I think that he is frightened of change, and is looking for excuses not to, maybe he wants it to be perfect when he does move. The bit that goes "the sun will shine, even if you don't happen to be there"- maybe it's that life goes on without the other person, and if he does go ahead and make this change, moving on, it means having to leave the other person and he wants to avoid making that descision by saying, i need new shoes for the race, etc, etc- maybe it's about having to grow up. At the end, he decides that it isn't worth running the race if it means losing this person. Just an idea.
