Hey, stop on a dime
Take both your hands
Reach them above, one at a time
Are you alone in here?
I heard the voice so clearly

I tried not to breathe
Tried not to speak
Clamping my tongue between my teeth
Are you alone in here?
I heard the voice so clearly say

Well, there are fine lines I've seen
We are stuck in between
With separate eyes to use and throw aside
How we die, nobody wants to know
Who decides where everybody goes?
Where everybody goes

Well, no, this can't be it
I start to sweat
Haunted by all the things I'd miss
This can't be right
I realized right then that
It's me or him, yeah

There are fine lines I've seen
We are stuck in between
With separate eyes to use and throw aside
How we die, nobody has to know
Who decides where everybody goes?
What if I don't?

Oh, no, I can't believe this
I don't know why
This had to happen
I had no choice
Well, it was me or him (x2)

There's a fine line
Between what is justified or just obscene
Fragile eyes to use and throw aside
How we die, nobody wants to know
Who decides where everybody goes?
Where everybody goes

How we died, no one will ever know
Who decides where everybody goes?
Who decides where everybody goes?
Who decides where everybody goes?
Who decides where everybody goes?
Who decides where everybody goes?
Who decides where everybody goes?
Who decides where everybody goes?
Who decides where everybody goes?
Who decides where everybody goes?

Hmm. Not totally sure what this song means. I think it might have to do with him being forced to make this big decision. Or it could just mean his life is ending, and he doesn't want to leave it because he's realized that there are so many thing he's missed in his life. I dunno. The "Well it was me or him" part could mean the decision could effect either him or the other guy....

hm. this is a GOOD song. i like it a lot! i thinkk (correct me if I'm wrong) its about him making a decision as to who will 'die'. I'm not sure whether he literally meant to die or to die in another sense. Either him or someone else will have to take the fall and 'die'. He's haunted with the fact that if he 'dies' then he'll miss out on so many things that have yet to come in his life.. idk. thats just my take on it.

in the first and second choruses, i'm not sure but instead of obscene isn't it unseen? that's what i always heard it as... william likes to mix around lyrics a lot with words that sound similar though so i might be mistaken hahah. anyway, this is one of my favorite academy is... songs. it's just so easy to sing along with/dance to/relate to even if you don't quite get it. i think it means he's been living life like okay i have to do this and this and this... and OH SNAP! i hope it's not too late to start doing what i've been wanting to do all along, instead of what to do just to get by in life... if that makes any sense at all? XD

I think William is saying that we live orderly and prototypical lives. We wake up in the morning, go to school/work, socialize, then go to bed at night. Then the next day we do it all over again. Then once we've done this same routine for long enough...we die. In the beginning he's talking about trying to hide from this inevitability. He realizes how little he's done, but only realizes this when it's too late. I think "Who decides where everybody goes? What if I don't?" is an important line. After discovering how much of a conformist he's been his whole life, he fears that he'll yet again be pushed into a path by some authoritative force (society in his first life, possibly some type of god in his second). LAST THING "There are fine lines I've seen We are stuck in between With separate eyes to use and throw aside" This reinforces my idea. In life, there are two fine lines that we cannot cross. So it ends up with us all being on this same straight and narrow path, never stepping out of line. As for the eyes, I think it emphasizes how insignificant our lives on Earth are. We see the world as we know it through our eyes, but after we die, they are completely useless. Maybe I'm waaaay off base. But that's at least what I take from this amazing song :)

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.

Midnight
Ed Sheeran
“Midnight” is a song about finding a love that is so true that it provides a calming feeling through every storm. Ed Sheeran reflects on his good fortunes in landing someone with such peace and support and speaks of not fearing the dark days because he knows they’ll all end in the safety nets of her arms. “Well, good morning there / What a way to start the day / With everything laid bare,” Ed Sheeran sings in the first verse, enthusiastic to be waking up beside his woman. He apologizes for missing her calls in the second verse and promises to return them because for him, speaking to her is the most important thing. “Well, I get lost inside my head / In this chaos, you’re my calm / And I will find my feet again / ‘Cause еven the worst days of my life will always еnd / At midnight in your arms,” sings Ed Sheeran in the chorus, revelling in his good luck.

Somewhere Only We Know
Keane
Per the FAQ on Keane's website, Keane's drummer Richard Hughes, stated the following: "We've been asked whether "Somewhere Only We Know" is about a specific place, and Tim has been saying that, for him, or us as individuals, it might be about a geographical space, or a feeling; it can mean something individual to each person, and they can interpret it to a memory of theirs... It's perhaps more of a theme rather than a specific message... Feelings that may be universal, without necessarily being totally specific to us, or a place, or a time..." With the nostalgic sentiment and the overall tone of the song, I think Keane is attempting to express a Portuguese term known as 'saudade', which does not have a direct English translation but roughly means "that which we remember because it is gone."

System
Mel And Kim
Just listening for the 784,654th time....and it's just perfect in every way. Just incredible. The only reason it was remade was to scoop up a boatload of money from a more modern and accepting audience. But it is a completely different song than the other one that sounds slapped together in a few takes without a thought for the meaning. This song captivates me still, after 50+ years. Takes me to the deep South and the poverty of some who lived thru truly hard times. And the powerful spirit of a poor young girl being abandoned to her future with only a red dress and her wits to keep her alive. She not only stayed alive, she turned her hard beginnings around, became self sufficient, successful and someone with respect for herself. She didn't let the naysayers and judgers stop her. She's the one sitting in the drivers seat at the end. So, not a song about a poor girl, but a song of hope and how you can rise up no matter how far down you started. There is a huge difference between a singer who simply belts out a song that is on a page in front of them, and someone who can convey an entire experience with their voice. Telling not just a story with words, but taking you inside it and making you feel like you are there, with their interpretation.
