Spoliarium Lyrics
May tumawag sa pangalan ko
Labing isang palapag
Tinanong kung okey lang ako
Sabay abot ng baso
May naghihintay
At bakit ba'pag nagsawa na ako
Bigla na lang ayoko na
Kung bat' tayo nandito
Puwede bang itigil muna
Ang pag-ikot ng mundo
San juan di ko na nasasakyan
Ang lahat ng bagay ay
Gumuguhit na lang sa 'king lalamunan
Sinong may pakana?
At bakit ba tumilapon ang
Gintong alak diyan sa paligid mo?
Kung ba't tayo nandito
Puwede bang itigil muna
Ang pag-ikot ng mundo
Anong sinulat ni Enteng at Joey diyan
Sa gintong salamin di ko na mabasa
Pagkat merong nagbura
Sinong nagpakana?
At bakit ba tumilapon ang spolarium
Diyan sa paligid mo?
Kung ba't tayo nandito
Puwede bang itigil muna
Ang pag-ikot ng mundo

Yeah basically what someone said before, I'm pretty sure t's a song talking about a famous rape case in the 80's in the Philippines. Famous comedians, Joey and Vic Sotto and a third person (Richie something) were accused of raping Pepsi Paloma (an actress) after getting her really drunk and passed out and she ended up killing herself. People speculate that she was murdered because she ended up dying before she could even testify. She did apparently have a history of depression and suicidal tendencies but I wouldn't be surprised if she was killed. People think it's a cryptic song because people expect that out of the Eraserheads but the song literally mentions Joey and the song is a lot like the story of Pepsi's rape.

In 1995 then senator and anti-drug czar Tito Sotto called for the banning of Eheads song Alapaap saying it encourages drug addiction.
In 1997 Ely Buendia struck back - yes, you got it - with this song Spoliarium. Basically, this is about a famous 1982 rape case involving Tito Sotto's brother Marvic or more popularly known as Vic or Enteng. Joey De Leon and Richie d Horsie, both famous comedian were also accused in the gang-rape. The victim was Pepsi Paloma, a starlet but only 15yo at the time. The case ended in settlement. Tito was already influential at the time and their lawyer was Rene Cayetano, yes, Allan's dad.
Pepsi came to news headlines once again in 1985 when she committed suicide by hanging.
"Umiyak ang umaga, anong sinulat ni Enteng at Joey diyan?" (Vic and Joey?) "Sa gintong salamin di ko na mabasa pagkat merong nagbura" (A whitewash?) Just a side though: Can a minor legally enter into a settlement agreement?
Anyway that's my take on this Spoliarium song. About its relation to the famous painting - where a dead body of a gladiator is being dragged like an ordinary object on the floor at the backstage - well my guess is as good as yours.
By the way, Imago's version of Spoliarium turned out sooo good too. .

i'm still figuring out the meaning of this song... i'm thinking it has something to do with the stereotype life in the busy metropolis... where some people just end up drowning their dreams and frustrations with alcohol...

Yeah its a little confusing but i think this is about sex and a whorehouse, coz he said someone is waiting in the 11th floor, add to that the mentioning of noted playboys in their time enteng (vic) and joey. also some motels have mirrored walls/ceilings. what spoliarium means, well ... some other time.

It's actually about a rape case in the early 90's. It involved famous people of the country. It would be wrong for me to include their names here. It ended bad for the victim though and i don't think it was ever brought to court. You can look it up in Google and such. But according to Sir Ely, the meaning of their music is how the listener perceives it to be. So it's basically different from one to another. Nevertheless, they are pure genius.

Tungkol sa inuman at walwalan until, as someone said at the above comments, you wound up getting too drunk that you need to get dragged a dead gladiator like that scene sa Juan Luna painting. \n\nDumilim ang paligid=nag blackout\nLabing isang palapag=sa condo ang inuman\nAbot ng baso=umiikot ang shots sa inuman\nGintong alak=scotch o t5 depende sa budget
