The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:

Baisically if this was a film, well its shite, because as the "hero" he can't do anything about it and the plot can't carry on. So if a film doesnt work, you blame the director. As he feels a bit strongly about it, he wants to "kill the director" "no bridget jones" = no happy ending. This is my head, this is my spout" is a referance to his brain and his sex drive, spout referring to penis. Even working together, they "can't figure anything out" which is how much this is an enigma to him.
Totally agree with what you say, and this being the first time I have read the lyrics (and realized he says "rom-com" (romantic comedy) instead of "roll call", which is huge) and I like your theory on the meaning of the chorus.<br /> One thing I would like to say is that I got a different meaning from "This is my head and this is my spout, they work together but they can't figure anything out" I think means that either one of them acting alone would be able to figure it out, but when they are both involved they confuse each other and cause this quagmire of "teenaged angst".

this song is absoloutly awesome i just dont get bored of it. i understand it all...almost. i get its all about how love isnt like happy endings and mushy movie scenes, it can be a pain and doesnt always turn out well. the only part i dont understand is about Carrots help us see much better in the dark whats the hell is that about? and is the head and spout not refering to the nursery rhyme...'im a little teapot short and spout heres my handle heres my spout'? lol?

In this story, the good thing is him falling in love and the clearer view is that love is shit. To be blunt. <br /> Love is put across as such a wonderful thing which makes people happy and is essential to be good as a human being, but as my interpretation shows, finding love, the ultimate goodness, opens your eyes to how bad the best thing in the world really is. <br /> <br /> I'd say the head and spout thing is basically his brain (head) and his heart (spout) disagreeing with each other. 'They work together; they can't figure anything out', working together is the act of falling in love and not being able to figure things out is that they both want to go in different directions and think different things of the situation. Basically I think they just wanted to put that slightly cliched emotion into the song without it sounding too repetitive.

I really love the wombats but especially this song. To me it's about being in love with someone who's a bit out of your league and you're too shy to admit to it.
