"Girl Disappearing" as written by and Tori Ellen Amos....
From in the shadow she calls
And in the shadow she finds a way finds a way
And in the shadow she CRAWLS
Clutching her faded photograph my image UNDER her thumb
Yes with a message for my heart
Yes with a message for my heart

She's been everybody else's girl maybe one day she'll be her own
Everybody else's girl maybe one day she'll be her own

And in the doorway they stay
And laugh as violins fill with water
Screams from the BLUEBELLS can't make them go away
We'll I'm not seventeen but I've cuts on my knees
Falling down as the winter takes one more CHERRY TREE

She's been everybody else's girl maybe one day she'll be her own
Everybody else's girl maybe one day she'll be her own

Everyone else's girl maybe one day she'll be her own
Rushin' rivers thread so thin limitation
Everyone else's girl maybe one day she'll be her own
Dreams with the flying pigs turbid blue and the drugstores too safe
in their coats anda in their do's yeah
Everyone else's girl maybe one day maybe one day one day one day
She'll be her own
Smother in our hearts a pillow to my dots

And in the mist there she rides
And castles are burning in my heart
And as I twist I hold tight
And I ride to work every morning wondering why
"Sit in the chair and be good now"
and become all that they told you
the white coats enter her room
and I'm callin' my baby callin' my baby callin' my baby callin'
Everybody else's girl maybe one day she'll be her own
Everybody else's girl maybe one day she'll be her own
Everybody else's girl maybe one day she'll be her own

General Commentwhen i listen to this song, I think of Paris Hilton type, representing what the world is interested right now in the news. How this so-called girl is working the red carpet, but deep down her soul and body are disappearing slowly. I know that Tori wrote this song before Paris went to prison, but the line, "a girl disapprearing to some secret prison," reminds me how she was punished. The line, "ditching the bombshell" reminds me of how our media is portraying thin as being beautiful.

General CommentThat's a very interesting interpretation Vettie-edder.. and I like your take on the constellation being "Star signs". I actually thought this was a song about Anorexia - "7 am So it beings again 1-0 (zip) favoring familiar silhouettes" which says that for anorexics.. the disease is constant and real to them, from the second they wake their weight is first thing on their mind and that is their dress size 1-0 being ideal. No protection from Urban light and envy spreading itself thin I think relates to the media and how women are portrayed and the emphasis placed on being thin - the play on words "envy can spread herself so thinly" and the final reference is the "girl disappearing" i.e. losing weight to "Some secret prison" which is a standard reference used for anorexia sufferers that their body becomes a prison.

On a completely random tangent - it could also be seen as being relevant to transgender and/or gender reasignment. A little left of centre - but you can see some relevance there.

General CommentThe anorexia definitely fits because the song before this one of the CD is Fat Slut.

General CommentI think the 'girl disappearing' refers to a woman who marries someone and then kinda fades away. The constellation is her 'familiar siloehette'. That's what she was. Kinda in a 'bells for her' sorta way, if you know what i mean.
The secret prison part refers to her marriage. Tori's afraid she's the girl disappearing behind wife and motherhood. at least that's what i think!

General Commenti think this may refer to those kind of women in the media, and maybe even to britney spears - tori recently did a song about her in melbourne. i thought the lyric was 'ditching the BLONDE shell', which could refer to when she shaved her hair off. i definitely agree with you guys though, that it's about seeing some famous women, disappearing before the eyes of the public, either through eating disorders or a breakdown.

General CommentTo me, this song is about a girl who's got a lot of bad things going on around her. But she's lost the will or the want to fight to get those things right. So she ends up feeling like she's losing herself or her identity to these bad things. That makes her the Girl Disappearing. I know that's probably not where Tori was coming from, but relating it to my own life, that's what I hear.
