"Hosea's Wife" as written by and Brooke Fraser....
I just spoke silence with the seeker next to me
She had a heart with hesitant, halting speech
That turned to mine and asked belligerently
"What do I live for?"

I see the scars of searches everywhere I go
From hearts to wars to literature to radio
There's a question like a shame no one will show
"What do I live for?"

We are Hosea's wife
We are squandering this life
Using people like ladders and words like knives

[Chorus]
If we've eyes to see
If we've ears to hear
To find it in our hearts and mouths
The word that saves is near
Shed that shallow skin
Come and live again
Leave all you were before
To believe is to begin

There is truth in little corners of our lives
There are hints of it in songs and children's eyes
It's familiar, like an ancient lullaby
What do I live for?

We are Hosea's wife
We are squandering this life
Using bodies like money and truth like lies

[Chorus]

We are more than dust
That means something
That means something
We are more than just
Blood and emotions
Inklings and notions
Atoms on oceans

General CommentThe meaning goes further than the literal interpretation. Hosea was the first prophet to use marriage as a metaphor between God and Israel. Brooke wrote this implying that as Christians (the wife of God), we need to fearlessly share His love to non-believers.

General Commenti used to think the lyrics to the first verse were:

i just spoke silence with the sick girl next to me
she had a heart with hesitant holding speed
i turned to mine and asked belligerently
    'what do i live for?'

...i thought that made sense since there was like a dying girl next to her and she was asking herself what she lived for! but i guess i was kind of off... altho the general meaning is the same

i really don't get the first verse with the right lyrics

otherwise i think the song is basically saying we spend so much time on the wrong stuff, and use people in all the wrong ways, and that there's a better way to live.

General Commentlol i thought she said 'sick girl' aswell...
i think by 'seeker' she means everyone is seeking for something, for what is worth living for.

'She had a heart with hesitant, halting speech'
im not sure what that means, someone insecure and unsure what to live for?
also on her website it says its 'I see the stars of searches' not scars but that doesnt make sense to me :S
anyway love the song and agree with the meanings =]

General CommentI think the meaning of this song is very clear but I, not normally being particularly adept at understanding the true meaning or the written word in song, poem or prose, would not have a clue to the meaning of this song without having spent much time in the word of God and prayer. I know virtually nothing about Brooke Fraser and had never heard of her until today but now, because she wrote this song, I know one thing about her for certain. She is a true Christian, otherwise she could never have written these words.
