Give me strength to face the truth, the doubt within my soul
No longer I can justify the bloodshed in His name
Is it a sin to seek the truth, the truth beneath the rose?
Pray with me so I will find the gate to Heaven's door

I believe it would justify the means
It had a hold over me
Blinded to see the cruelty of the beast
It is the darker side of me (forgive me my sins)
The veil of my dreams deceived that I have seen
Forgive me for what I have been
Forgive me my sins!

Pray for me 'cause I have lost my faith in holy wars
Is paradise denied to me 'cause I can't take no more?
Has darkness taken over me, consumed my mortal soul?
All my virtues sacrificed, can Heaven be so cruel?

I believe it would justify the means
It had a hold over me (forgive me my sins)
Blinded to see the cruelty of the beast
It is the darker side of me (forgive me my sins)
The veil of my dreams deceived that I have seen
Forgive me for what I have been
Forgive me my sins!

I'm hoping, I'm praying, I won't get lost between two worlds
For all I have seen the truth lies in between
Give me the strength to face the wrong that I have done
Now that I know the darkest side of me

How can blood be our salvation
And justify the pain that we have caused throughout the times
Will I learn what's truly sacred?
Will I redeem my soul, will truth set me free?

(Forgive me my sins) blinded to see the cruelty of the beast
It is the darker side of me (forgive me my sins)
The veil of my dreams deceived that I have seen
Forgive me for what I have been
Forgive me my sins!

I agree, it is definitely inspired by The Da Vinci Code, but it's not about the story of it, but the meaning. When two things that make sense collide in religion, sometimes you can't always determine what is right because they both seem right. This conflict can lead to challenges of faith that you have to work through. In this song, it seems that she made a choice of what to believe and it has led her astray. She doesn't feel like it is her fault, but she realizes she has done wrong. This parallels the storyline in The Da Vinci Code where one truth seems to conflict with another truth, and only one is really true, and it causes a question of faith.

In the song, after she realizes she was wrong to go the way she did, she wants to be forgiven, she wants to come back to God (or whoever she believes in), but she isn't sure if she can.

A very important word to understand is beast. In the Bible, the Book of Revelations, there is a beast that is talked about. This beast is a symbol of the AntiChrist, who is going to perform miracles and claim to be Christ (claim to be the right way) when really, he is not. She fears she was deceived by an AntiChrist, and now she wants to come back to the true Christ.

I hope that satisfies some people.

Having seen the 'davinci code' comment which I don't really understand, my first guess would seem to be wrong. My thought was that she is having a crisis of faith. She still believes in God, but has lost faith in organized religion. After a long time of blind faith, she suddenly sees the hypocracy and the violence of religion, both now and throughout history. (Nearly every war can be traced back to religion and usually also greed on one or more likely both side, but there is violence on a smaller scale as well.) She disavows her affiliation with them but now fears she lost god's favor in doing so. The rose is a symbol of the outward appearance of religion (rightious, innocent, full of love and beauty), but the hidden truth is the corruption, greed, and bloodshed that is excused as being done in the name of god. The lines about the wrongs she has done, and the darker side, I don't know, maybe she took part in some thing and now feels remorse? Some of that doesn't quite fit, but its the best I could come up with.

hmmm... i was thinking the religious crusades led by christian followers to restore christian control to the Holy Land between 1095-1291. Many, if not all of the fighters, believed that they were fighting for their God, and what they were doing was necessary for them to be considered worthy for heaven. It is likely that at least some people had doubts about whether the blood shed was what their god was asking for. "Give me strength to face the truth, the doubt within my soul"

There is a conflict of emotions, and what to do. "No longer i can justify the blood shed in his name". the person is told that to appease their god, he/she needs to kill and help bring the holy land under christian rule. but, the person questions if it is really the right thing to do.

oh, sorry "bloodyenvy", i just scrolled up and saw your comment after i finished writing my own! -.-"

"Pray for me 'cause I have lost my faith in holy wars " one of their many themes, as with this song...

There are a few mistakes in the above lyrics. Where the hell do you guys get them from? Buy the CD and you'll have the right lyrics and put them then in here!! I hate if someone puts in here wrong lyrics. Here are the right ones (out of the booklet):

Give me strength to face the truth, the doubt within my soul No longer I can justify the bloodshed in his name Is it a sin to seek the truth, the truth beneath the rose? Pray with me so I will find the gate to Heaven’s door I believed it would justify the means It had a hold over me

Blinded to see the cruelty of the beast It is the darker side of me The veil of my dreams deceived all I have seen Forgive me for what I have been Forgive me my sins

Pray for me cause I have lost my faith in holy wars Is paradise denied to me cause I can’t take no more Has darkness taken over me, consumed my mortal soul All my virtues sacrificed, can Heaven be so cruel? I believed it would justify the means It had a hold over me

Blinded to see the cruelty of the beast It is the darker side of me The veil of my dreams deceived all I have seen Forgive me for what I have been Forgive me my sins

I’m hoping, I’m praying I won’t get lost between two worlds For all I have seen the truth lies in between Give me the strength to face the wrong that I have done Now that I know the darkest side of me

How can blood be our salvation And justify the pain that we have caused throughout the times Will I learn what’s truly sacred? Will I redeem my soul, will truth set me free?

Blinded to see the cruelty of the beast It is the darker side of me The veil of my dreams deceived all I have seen Forgive me for what I have been Forgive me my sins

I agree with Mhorton, their interpretation seems very fitting with the lyrics. I know it was written inspired by the Da Vinci code but I don't think it's really about a big religious conspiracy that's trying to covered up.

I love this song so much! But I can't help but feel the orchestral bit a the beginning is really familiar.

Mhorton, your meaning is spot on. That's exactly the way I interpreted it but you explained it so much more clearly than I could - respect!

I think this song is also, more generally speaking, about reawakening of consciousness after any blind following of faith - not necessarily religious faith. I believe also that the referral to the Da Vinci Code it is really in the meaning: an event, a thought, a discovery that makes all our previous beliefs crumble like a sand castle, so that we can see how biased were our opinions and how the truth lies in between, as the song says. It is the main point of the whole album; as in the leading song, in The Truth Beneath The Rose I read another "Open up your eyes".

Probably my favorite song ever. It is inspired and intense, and sung in a exceptional way. This song has the best lyrics I have ever read.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.
