Oh oh oh oh ho oh
Oh oh oh oh ho oh

I want in like a substitute
I've been working awful hard for you
But you don't say, you just hold your breath
So I can't touch what I haven't yet
She's a cold one and it hurts me so
And it's a dark path and a heck of a cold
And she can feel me just like she did before

Oh we'd be so free
Happy alone
Sharing a smile
So far from home

Push in and I pull it away
It's a hard part but the true love way
Girl you want it like I want it now
With your smart mouth and your killer hands
We could both share all that I have made
For a young man it's a heck of a wage
And I feel crazy when I see your face

Oh oh oh oh ho oh

'Cause we'd be so free (Oh oh oh oh ho oh)
Happy alone (Oh oh oh oh ho oh)
Sharing a smile (Oh oh oh oh ho oh)
So far from home (Oh oh oh oh ho oh)
And we would laugh (Oh oh oh oh ho oh)
Laugh till we cried (Oh oh oh oh ho oh)
Making a song (Oh oh oh oh ho oh)
Making a lie (Oh oh oh oh ho oh)

And people say I'm crazy for walking this town
And people say I'm bigger for walking this town
And people say maybe they're just wandering around
And people say I'm bigger for walking a'

Oh oh oh oh ho oh
Oh oh oh oh ho oh
Oh oh oh oh ho oh
Oh oh oh oh ho oh

And we'd be so free
Happy alone
Sharing a smile
So far from home
And we would laugh
Laugh till we cried
Making a song
Making a lie
Happy alone

For a guy that says he gets bored within the first 30 minutes of a relationship he sure writes and sings like he wants us. A guy that is in love with the idea of love just like so many of us. Anyway, I appreciate this song so much and depending on lyrics I have two of my own interpretations. One: my agreement with everyone on the idea of wanting what you can't have or she is not responding to his subtle advances, and he just like every other guy wants her so what makes him so special, all of that. Two: depending on actual lyrics I sometimes think it's talking about having a relationship with a virgin...just a second now hear me out. Ok it starts off...

I want in like a substitute (He wants to be with her, be in her, join her club what have you. He wants to be THAT GUY to her. Like a substitute teacher wants the actual teachers job. Or he wants to be the substitute for how she..uhh...pleases herself. Hey they write about sex A LOT!)

I’ve been working awful hard for you (He has been trying to convince her that he is trustworthy)

But you don’t say, you just hold your breath (She won't give him an answer about if she is ready to give her virginity to him or not)

So I can’t touch what I haven’t yet (He's a decent guy and figures Hey we haven't done anything yet so I can miss what I haven't had)

She’s a cold one and it hurts me so (She takes a stand on this matter and wants him to wait)

It's a dark path and a heck of a toll (Well, it sucks, but yeah it's survivable)

She could kill me just like she did before (Later it says smart mouth and killer hand...you can guess what she does pretty well with her mouth and hand, and he can be ok with just doing that)

Pushing and pulling weight (Here's where it gets confusing, if it does say I push in then I pull it away, it's what my friends and I call "just the tip just for a minute". So he's not popping her cherry, but they are doing something. If not it still makes sense to what a relationship should be like, pushing and pulling your own weight.)

It’s the hard part but the true love way (If it's I push in, it's hard not going all the way with her because he loves her and wants to share that with her, but he respects her wishes, and he's a guy so it's hard to respect her wishes sometimes. If it's pushing, that's the hard part of every relationship.

Girl you're wanted like a wanted man (He wants her, every guy wants her, everyone is out to get her, gunnin' for her, she's just swell.)

With your smart mouth and your killer hand (This could be an "if you know what I mean" or she's sassy, and actually I thought it was hair at first and that he liked her hair?? Probably the first one)

We could both share all that I have made (He wants to let her into his life)

For a young man it’s a heck of a wage (That's a lot for a young guy to give. Giving up that sense of freedom)

I'm still shaky when I see your face (Every girl wants to hear that. They have been together for awhile and he stills looks at her the way he did the first day they met.)

Cause we’d be so free Happy alone (Maybe be they would be better off apart because abstinence is so hard to bear)

Sharing a smile So far from home And we would laugh Laugh till we cried Making up songs (They could still be friends)

You're making me lie (About being ok with just being friends)

People say our babies are walking this town (They are so good together people think they probably already went through with it or should go through with it.)

Those are my interpretations. Might fit might not I like thinking about it though. I adore this song.

Or...it could just be a song...

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
