It will be hard, my love
It will be hard but it can be done
My kisses will put out
The forest fire I started
I will not let, I will not let
You get further from me
You must fight for me

Oh, it was a funny feeling
To be wanted
So, it was a funny feeling
We only ever notice
We only ever notice
When it seems like all is lost
You know it meant nothing to you

Remember the good times
Remember me sleeping by your side
Remember the feeling
That you were safe in my arms
I still see sons in you
My sons of sons in your eyes
This love's not over
This love's not over

Oh, it was a funny feeling…

And we can make a raft from all the dead trees
And set sail for better times
To a time when this love was not poisoned
I was kind and I was kind

And we can make a raft…

(Atonement)

Oh, it was a funny feeling…

(This is my atonement)

It will be hard, my love
It will be hard but it can be done

hrmm i think he's usuing the general definition of the word. reconciliation, reparations, etc etc. I think it's about some sort of apology. He fucked up, now he's making it better (his atonement).

Yeah I agree with eoin, the song's about trying to patch up a relationship with someone and trying to pursuade them that it's worth it. The lines "My kisses will put out/The forest fire I started" indicate the that they'd obviously compromised the relationship at some point but want to make up for it.

i actually think this was influenced by the book written by ian mcewan, atonement. they also have a track called 'the marshalls are dead' a direct quote from the book. the lyrics directly reflect the plot.its beautiful

"I still see suns in you My suns and suns in your eyes"

i'm almost 100% sure that it reads 'sons' and 'sons OF sons'. It makes more sense, i.e. he still sees the future they could have together, the children they could have, and the children their children could have.

One of BP's best b-sides..definately about both trying to start anew but first forgiving previous actions.

Its a great song. Its about kele cheating on a partner and trying to convince said partner to forgive him.

Hence why its "you know it meant nothing to me" instead of "you know it meant nothing to you"

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
