look at me, you creep, straight in the eyes. i won't let you leave over my dead body; maybe yours too, read between the lines and see my middle finger's in disguise. oh, you wrote down every lie. oh, there's nothing left to hide.

pretty, perfect, girly, dressed in black. purple highlights in the back. i see you as you are, i see you're transparent. i see you as you are, i see you're transparent. leaning on one hip with a cigarette, thinking your ass is as good as it gets. i see you as you are, i see you're transparent. i see you as you are, i see you're transparent.

i just saw you twitch; twitching like a mouse. pretending to play dead in this kitty's house. so, i'll toy with you. so try not to be caught. i'll close my teeth sharp, and my temple's hot. oh, you wrote down every lie. oh, there's nothing left to hide.

pretty, perfect, girly, dressed in black. purple highlights in the back. i see you as you are, i see you're transparent. i see you as you are, i see you're transparent. leaning on one hip with a cigarette, thinking your ass is as good as it gets. i see you as you are, i see you're transparent. i see you as you are, i see you're transparent.

Hmm...i don't see this song as so self-explanatory as other seem to.

To me it seems like the singer is directing the verses to her guy, and the chorus to the girl he's cheating on her with.

Verse 1: She calls him a "creep", but even though he's cheated on her she won't let him leave. Her "middle finger's in disguise" - she's trying to pretend she's fine & nothing has happened.

Chorus: Addressing the girl, she notes the looks that have drawn in her guy - "pretty, perfect...purple highlights". She resents her for taking her man & insults her for being vain ("thinking your ass is as good as it gets") and fake. Her guy has obviously seen something attractive in her, but she sees her as she is- "transparent".

Verse 2: She talks about how her guy denies anything has been going on with the other girl ("pretending to play dead in this kitty's house"). She uses a cat & mouse metaphor to show that she knows what's he's been up to and can "toy" with him. At any second she could reveal her knowledge of the truth and destroy him with it. ("close my teeth sharp")

I'd be interested to hear other peoples ideas on the story/meaning behind this song.

wouldn't "read between the lines and see my middle finger's in disguise" be telling him to fuck off? You know, giving him the middle finger. Because a lot of people hold up three fingers and say read between the lines... try it lol.

Just_Some_Asian...never heard of that one but it makes sense! The first virst is just her venting full-scale anger at him then. Thanks for the input :]

i believe sparks of gold is right.

no song is just completely obvious. she mixes people in her songs, and you can tell. b-cuz its always like its more than just about her or one other person, its like its 2 other people and herself.

    in some of them.

like she was going thru a stage because in red light district maybe this is the girl (sparks of gold brings up) and shes just giving him what he wants, and hes sticking around with Alaina (who is the singer of porcelain and the tramps btw. or so i think) but hes having sex with this other girl, and she metaphorically calling her a whore... (in red light)

and king of the world too, shes DEF. NOT talking about herself... and she says he always crawling at your bed or something close to those lyrics.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
