Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
I think this song is about becoming famous and how people think that fame changes all aspects of your life even the way you used to think. As if with fame, the silly things you used to do and the memories of unimportant nonsense are erased because you are now an "important" person. however this song talks about how he is still mentally connected with the people and ways of his old life and how his new rich self isn't who he really is but is someone he would have made fun of with his old friends. the sad part about this song is that he is doomed to isolation by hanging on to his old life which is ultimately unachievable as his new lifestyle has created a social barrier and his old friends have no doubt moved on, leaving him living through his past self. (no idea if this is correct, it's merely what I got from the song)
There's a tension in this song:
On the one hand , the protagonist does not want to be cut off from his roots, does not want to be a pretty princely boy taking his cues from the pretty people, and does not want to be a creature and a prisoner of luxury, and of servants who are always servile and never tell the truth.
At the same time, I think he'd love all the unguents and marvels and dainties given to Prince Magarett and Princess Jagger.
