It’s just a merry little…

It’s just the one that I had
It’s just the one for me tonight
It’s just the one that I had
It’s just the one for me
It’s just the one that I had
Oh, maybe two… I don’t know…
It’s just the one that I had
So leave me, leave me, leave me.

It’s just the two of us here
It’s just the two of us now
It’s just the two of us here
Spending all your hard earned doe
It’s just the two of us here
It’s just the two of us now
It’s just the two of us
So we can talk about it

And when we’re waiting in the dark
You turn into a sacred spark
And I can see you flicker over there
But I can’t feel you so I guess
That you’re not really there unless the lights come back on.

So just kill me off now
Because I ain’t got a pretty face
So just take my knees out
It’s my only saving grace
Don’t come over to me and tell me how great I was
Just come over to me and tell me how great I am.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
