I think this song is about someone who has a great life, but anything good they've got going for them is overshadowed by who's missing. They've got nothing without that one person. The person they're missing is a void that can't be filled. They chase some pills with some booze to shake things up, change the scenery. This is a secret and they try to keep it from everyone. I think they're visibly disturbed (and the people close to them notice), but no one knows exactly what's wrong. Since no one knows what's up, they are left to grieve alone and nothing around them changes or adjusts for them because 'nothing is wrong'. They cry over whatever they write because when it's written down on paper its real. I think they're lonely because that person isn't around, and he's really the only person missing. I think the reference to schoolbooks implies this is a young romance. This person feels forgotten, and they feel foolish for thinking that person would even remember to think of them. It's a big, bright, beautiful idea that thet could be together, but it was never possible and it's slowly fading away. She isn't really looking for him to come around anymore, but she just wants to know what was wrong with her, and what she could have done for him want be with her.
I've never felt so alone as when I listened to this song.
