Sad foot sign
Why you gotta
Taunt me this way?

The happy side
Is broken now
It's gonna be an awful day

And if I have to drive back by
to see you from a different side
Would be enough to say:
"the first time was a lie"

Sad foot sign
the end is coming
that's what they say

Maybe you could
See it in your heart for one day
To let me feel what it's about
To really be alive
To live and breathe and see and feel
Then I can die

And when I come back to this room
I'll put on a uniform
And go into the foot sign shop
Where you were born

General CommentSays E of this song:

"There's a foot clinic in Silver Lake that has a revolving sign with a sad, frowning foot on crutches on one side, and a happy, healthy foot on the other side. As soon as I first saw this I developed a pathological superstition where whichever side was facing me just as I drove by would dictate the kind of day I was going to have, i.e., sad side: bad day, happy side: good day. Years later I learned that Beck lived up the road from it and had the same superstition, of course."

General CommentMusing on a broken street sign as a barometer for "how am I feeling today". An extraordinary power conferred upon it, the belief/supersition that it not only predicts the day but actually FORMS it (Maybe you could see it in your heart one day, to let me....).

The last stanza refers to the desire of the narrator to be able to see and ultimately understand, and even control, its power over him.

    Heh. That's what I think, anyway. :)
