I saw your headlights in the window
My face was pressed against the glass
I waited for years for you to return before I learned
That you were never coming back

I'm gonna close my eyes before I start to scream

I'm dwelling on things I've never noticed
You won't save yourself, you'll never save me
I only stumbled once for a moment, it was over
I think I'll close my eyes before I start to scream

You said today's the day goodbye just won't wait

And if you need me to, I'll wait until September
It's come and gone, November's on its way
So easy to forget and hard to remember, I remember
The way to getting back our self-esteem

The lines on your face are getting clearer
To me you'll always be 23
They said you wouldn't hold on too much longer
But you're so much stronger than they ever thought you'd be

I'm gonna open up and tell you everything

And if you need me to, I'll wait until September
It's come and gone, November's on its way
So easy to forget and hard to remember, I remember
The way to getting back our self-esteem

Oh yeah, no regrets
You got no one left
I hope that every step reminds you of the ones that you left

And if you need me to, I'll wait until September, yeah
It's come and gone, November's on its way, on its way, yeah
So easy to forget and hard to remember, I remember
The way to getting back our self-esteem, oh yeah
Back our self-esteem, oh

They said you wouldn't hold on too much longer
But you're so much stronger than they ever thought you'd be

    My Opinion

    I love this song.

Yeah, at first I thought it was about someone leaving and never coming back.

"they said you wouldnt hold on too much longer but you're so much stronger then they ever thought you'd be"

I think that means, like... Everyone assumed that the person would return but she really didn't because she had more willpower than everyone gave her credit for.

    My Interpretation

I may be reading too much into it, but it really seesms to me like he's lamenting his father (or mother I suppose) leaving when he was a kid. Some of the lines seem innocent and then later are replaced by more bitter counterparts. Just my take.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
