the concept of the 'child' everyone speaks of makes perfect sense, yet i also have my own opinion of the lyrical meaning:
i interpreted the last three lines of the song as very literal in content (planting said seeds soil). henry david thoreau wrote a book entitled "walden" which depicted man with a personal declaration of freedom , spiritual discovery, and self-reliance all the while disregarding the rest of society to flee into the woods for a more satisfying life style.
"planting seeds can't be the only way to find a simple day, a simpler way" is this sort of cry of doubt about how can it really be so that in this world the only way to experience complete happiness is to let all material possessions go and separate yourself from the hardships of society.
about ways to achieve immortality
its definitely not about that.
its about having a child. and it's summed up with
Planting seeds cant be the only way to find a simple day, a simpler way.
because thats what people do to fullfil there lives. have a family. and he is saying that can't be the only way to find fullfillment and simplicity in life.
I agree totally however in a way that id the only way you can achieve immortality... by planting your seed.. so your both right.

I agree with enjoyyourroots... but does anyone know why the song is called "Ida, My"?? just wondering
having children is one way to achieve immortality and hes saying that cant be the only way

Well, Ida is a peak, of central Crete. It is the highest elevation on the island and in ancient times was closely associated with the worship of Zeus. (according to dictionary.com)

So when you think of a peak, you think of a zenith, something that is at its highest state/point. And apparently when you're at your highest state of fulfillment, having a family is what makes you fulfilled, like enjoyyourroots said. Or back in those ancient greek times, Zeus was the god of weather and the sky, so when you think of weather and spring, you think of birth....

And since apparently Greece was dry, they prayed to Zeus for rain, and with rain or water, you think of comething being reborn or born, etc.
I pretty much stretched that Ida thing as far as I could to draw a correlation to the song. Make any sense? I really can't think of anything else and I could be totally off!
Also, I feel like the song is saying he wants to get away from everyday life and find new life in his child to have a simpler life, because children's lives are so simple and he misses that. And he is wondering why that seems to be the only way of escape.
