Dead is the new alive
Despair's the new survival
A pointless point of view
Give in, give in, give in, give in
You play the game
You'll never win

Dead is the new alive
Life's only living rival
A casket built for two
Give in, give in, give in, give in
You play the game
You'll never win

So take me now or take me never
I won't wait
You're already late
So say goodbye or say forever
Choose your fate
How else can we survive?
Dead is the new alive

Dead is the new alive
A gothic play revival
The last act of the show
Give in, give in, give in, give in
You play the game
You'll never win

So take me now or take me never
I won't wait
You're already late
So say goodbye or say forever
Choose your fate
How else can we survive?
Dead is the new alive

What is day without a blessed night?
And what is peace without a blessed fight?
What is the day without a blessed night?
And what is peace without a blessed, blessed, blessed fight?

A quick taste of the poison
A quick twist of the knife
When the obsession with death
The obsession with death becomes a way of life

A quick taste of the poison
A quick twist of the knife
When the obsession with death
The obsession with death becomes a way of life

Alive, alive, alive
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Alive, alive, alive
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Alive, alive, alive
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Alive, alive, alive
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

Dead is the new alive
Alive, alive, alive
Dead is the new alive
Alive, alive, alive
Alive
Dead is the new alive
Alive
Dead is the new alive

Dead is the new alive
Dead is the new alive
Dead is the new alive
Dead is the new alive
Dead is the new alive
Dead is the new alive
Dead is the new alive
Dead is the new alive

I watched an interview with her on YouTube and apparently the meaning comes from her obsession with the Victorian and it's depicting how the women must have felt while in the asylums.

I just thought of this- But does this song remind ANYONE else of the movies SAWI,II,III, and IV? ("You play the game, you never win" / "The obsession with death becomes a way of life") -- those could follow how Jigsaw became obsessed with those things after he was told when he was to die, along when his wife intruded after the death of their baby... Just a crazy thought. c:

    Song Meaning

I like all of your interpretations. I'd agree this song is about suicide, but I also think this is a romantically-driven suicide, more specifically the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet.

"So take me now or take me never I won't wait You're already late So say goodbye or say forever Choose your fate How else can we survive? Dead is the new alive"

Romeo was too late to come and save Juliet when he finds her "dead" corpse in the tomb. Then she sings: "A gothic play revival The last act of the show"

Both suicides occurred at the very last act of the play of Romeo and Juliet..

Lastly comes the quote that many of you found particular interest in: "A quick taste of the poison, a quick twist of the knife When the obsession with death The obsession with death becomes a way of life"

Romeo drank poison when he found Juliet "dead" and ends up dying. Juliet wakes up from her fake death only to find her love dead before her. She kisses his lips, which still have a bit of poison left on them and stabs herself with his dagger.

Because of the romanticism that many of today's society place upon the play, it would seem that Emilie Autumn is drawing parallels to what society perceives as "romantic" and what it SHOULD consider "romantic". I'm actually surprised nobody else imagined the Romeo and Juliet reference.

I love the lines "When the obsession with death/ The obsession with death becomes a way of life" because it does and it did for me. :-)

I like how this song has a dual meaning; not only can it be commentary on a descent into an obsession with all things Goth as a way of fitting in, but it also paints a good portrait of someone who has lost so much hope that suicide (or thinking about it) "becomes a way of life".

To me this song reflects an eating disorder my friend struggles with:

"Dead is the new alive, despairs the new survival." Because she's so tiny she looks dead, and to her survival is not eating, being hungry.

"A pointless point of veiw" Is how she thinks she's fat when she's tiny.

"You play the game, you never win" No matter how small she gets she's not tiny enough.

"A casket built for two" Sometimes anorexia is classified by a girl named 'Ana' who many talk about as if she's real.

"What is peace, without a blessed fight?" The peace she finds on the scale, being a pound lighter, only comes with fighting herself not to eat.

"A quick taste of the poison, a quick twist of the knife. When the obsessionw ith death, when the obsession with death becomes a way of life" The poison is food, almost as bad as a knife cutting her. The obsession with death, the obsession of looking dead, becomes a way of life. Anorexia.

To me, this is what a suicide victim is thinking about right before they die.

Dead is the new alive Because most people would rather be alive than dead, but a seriously depressed person might have it reversed. To them, dead is the new alive.

Give in, give in, give in, give in Just give in and kick the bucket.

You play the game, you'll never win Do whatever you want with your life, but in the end you'll be dead no matter what.

A quick taste of the poison, a quick twist of the knife It would just be so easy to end your life, it's so tempting.

    That's my perception.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
