I would love to see that tree. It sounds positively beautiful.
In a nutshell, this song is about holding on to childhood memories and the innocence associated with it after the person she shared it with is gone.
Such a stunningly simple song about, in my opinion, innocent childhood love...hanging things on a tree seems so childishly pure...could be a metaphor, but I'd rather take it at face value as someone remembering their past.
this song talks about the obvious loss of a significant other, but the actions of hanging their precious belongings remind me of the idea that love isn't always carefree, it involves some sort of sacrifice.
I agree with Benjamin. I think the person has lost a person they were close to. Although I think the second verse could be when they broke up, and she had a problem with alcohol? Not sure. Shes doesn't want to forget the person anyway, because the person was 'sparkling'. Beautiful song.
i think its just meaningful memories that hits her one day that brings back a sad memory of a person she lost/broke ties with. its simple, im sure we've all lost or broke up with someone we love and remember really meaningful memories that ultimately leads to you wanting them back, so she just wrote a song about her experience.

my interpretation of this song is the deforestation in the world..the speaker's personal experience of the many lovable moments she spent in a forest, particularly remembering this one tree by the river...if you notice she states "there used to be a tree" meaning it's not there anymore..she is then saying she fears loosing the attachment she once felt with nature...
This song is incredible. Childhood, lost-childhood, maybe - I think it might be a sibling that's passed away and she's trying to hold onto as many memories, visuals as possible.
Innocent childhood love, I think, is exactly what this song is about as well; however, I think that the question then should extend itself into for whom is the love for. I know there are no biographical references, no pronouns, no hints or suggestions as to who she is speaking to. Hence, and I hate to say hence (because it so open ended) but I am thinking mythical here: if not a god figure, atleast a diety of some sort. The tree is a homage. The tree is light and gifted. And as sacrafice, as first suggested, it is a attempt to get back to simplicity and innocence. In any way one may chose to follow that path.
