Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme
In the place, through which we wander
Reason turned around
And every fool
Will see his madness crowned
And every truth is swallowed up
I dig the giving ground

What you have lost can never be found
Words are just dust in deserts of sound
Everything is lost and your trust lies broken
And the truth is drowned

I watch
Surrender
Because I know
...
Now I know you will not see
The madness we have seen
Now I know you cannot be
All that your flight has been

What you have lost can never be found
Words are just dust in deserts of sound
Everything is lost and your trust lies broken
And the truth is drowned

Words are just dust
I stood but you just could not wait
Behind
Because I know you cannot be
All that your flight has been

What you have lost can never be found
Words are just dust in deserts of sound
Everything is lost and your trust lies broken
And the truth is drowned

Everything is lost in the giving ground
Everything is lost
Everything is lost in the giving ground
Turned around
Reason, turned around
In the giving ground
Ground
In the giving ground
Everything is lost
In the giving ground

Nearly every site that has lyrics for this track is incorrect.

    He does NOT say:

"And every fool Will see his madness drowned"

He says, "And every fool will see his madness CROWNED"

That is the entrie point of the song, that there is no justice in life. People do not treasure the truth or honesty, it is the madmen and manipulators who get ahead, thereby seeing their madness crowned. It is only the truth that gets "drowned".

Also at the end of the first stanza he says "I dig the giving ground".

In the chorus it is "trust" not "choice" that lies broken.

Later it is "flight" not "fright". "Now I know you cannot be all that your FLIGHT has been". He is questioning the person's path and judging their socalled success because of how they got there. He held the line with integrity assuming that he would one day succeed on merit (I stood but you could not wait), but the person to whom he is speaking took the shortcut of untruth.

The song is about truth and how modern people prize material success and power ahead of truth. The thing that has been lost and can never be found is integrity, trust or truth itself. Logic and reason fail in the face of lies and distortion. In a world of swirling noise and constant deception it becomes impossible to hear the truth.

I would also note in general that these are the lyrics to the extended version which skips key words. For example, in this version he says "I watch... surrender" while the original provides the entire "I watch as you surrender".

It does look like a loss of faith in politics.

But could it also apply to a loss of faith in a lover, or ex-lover, I wonder...

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
