false hope handed down, spun all around,
with ignorance from past generations.
how many times and with how many rhymes?
how many twisted endings for you to realize?
it's not fair for you to say what every heart should pay.
it's another body and soul that isn't your own.
get off my back. this was never salvation for me.
keep it away.
don't feel a thing can't make believe i do.
it's something i don't need.
something that you do and i respect you
turning a page on an old book misread.
twenty something rows back now offer up your souls
at the drop of a single white robe.
all things foretold. do you know what.
mans worst creation has got you in its hold.
i refuse to stand for organized crime.
organized crime comes in more forms than one
and your god is no excoetion.
if i'm not being clear this right
here is about my disgust with the way i was almost brought up.
i'm taking it back, my piece of mind.
we'll leave it at that.
in '83 a lamb was led for many years until its head began to swell.
it did explode with reasons to think on its own.

It's not hypocrisy at all. There's a huge huge huge difference between Christianity and the institution of Christianity. I believe in Jesus and hold him in my heart, but I am disgusted by a lot of the things Christians do in the name of him. I do not find church important right now because I feel like I experience God in different ways. I think the church sometimes does things that are very business oriented, I think many times the church hates where they should love, I think many times the church relies on preying where they could be doing more with their own bodies. I think many times the church abuses its power. And that is the institution doing what an institution does, not Christianity doing Gods work. And that's probably part of where SYG is coming from.

This song, in no way, is a contradiction of itself. They are simply stating that they will not disrespect anyone for their personal religious beliefs as long as they aren't trying to force their beliefs onto them. They think the whole concept of going to church, and organized religion as a whole is absurd, but if that's your thing, go for it. They will not ever believe, so don't try to make them is the basic message. As for the title, referring to the bible as 'an old book misread' is genius. The bible was a piece of literature that individuals decided to look a little too far into. Of course, this is just my opinion and everyone will have their own views on religion. I agree with the person above me in saying that the 'lamb' is the lyricist himself, and that while he was a child he had no say in choosing if he wanted to go to church or not. He then finally got the chance to choose and decided it wasn't his thing.

I'm a pretty big SYG fan, but I'm not a fan of this song's lyrics at all. It's complete hypocrisy to say "I respect your beliefs" but at the same time call them ignorance, organized crime, and twisted.

it's pretty clear that the song is about the church and how they dislike the way it's run.

I heard that one of them is into to God and such, and the other guy is against it...but they still respect each other. i don't know if its entirely true, but someone told me that.

This song is pretty much obviously about being able to accept that other people believe in God, but having a different personal perception. 'This was never salvation for me.' This line is definitely my favorite.
