I need someone's hand to lead me through the night
I need someone's arms to hold and squeeze me tight
Now when the night begins I'm at an end
Because I need your love so bad.

I need some lips to feel next to mine
I need someone to stand up and tell me when I'm lyin'
And when the lights are low and it's time to go
That's when I need your love so bad.

So why don't you give it up and bring it home to me
Or write it on a piece of paper baby, so it can be read to me
Tell me that you love me, and stop driving me mad
Oh because I, I need your love so bad.

I need your soft voice, to talk to me at night
I don't want you to worry baby,
I know we can make everything alright
Listen to my plea, baby, bring it to me
Because I need your love so bad.

Not that singers only sing songs that have a personal slant but if so, sounds like he’s got what he’s looking for already. It seems so—I think Trudie will even let him know if he’s lying—they seem pretty honest and straightforward with each other. Maybe she doesn’t write letters …. Oh, but she probably emails or has a cell. My, but we’re snoopy-noses! We are, aren’t we? It’s you—you incite me into all kinds of mischief—you’re not a good influence on me. I thought it was you corrupting me! You did not and you know it has not escaped me that you seem to have me flitting off lately as if I’d been nipping Love Potion #9. What gives? I’m not doing that—must be happening naturally. With you, it’s always so hard to tell. Maybe you’re hungering for the great light. Aren’t you funny … “Oh great light … of love..” Makes me crack up … Was meant to… love to see you laughing…

Remember when we would write letters that literally danced off the pages? Oh yeah, but no one wanted them. What do you think ever happened to them? Trashed. No one wanted to read any of that stuff. And we did chat rooms way before they were popular—loved our chats. I did too but alas, they were equally unpopular … boy, aren’t we pathetic? Yeah, pathetic ….

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Cajun Girl
Little Feat
Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
