With the sun in your eyes
It's easy mistaking
The truth from the lies
In the love that you're making
Don't pretend it isn't so

With the sun in your eyes
It always reveals
A voluntary bondage
That always appeals
It's how you make the garden grow

But why this weakness
No-one knows
Our conscience cries its sorrow
While we sleep
But once the morning comes
Out the back door
Silently it creeps

With the sun in your eyes
Always reminding
A sense of excitement
You've no hope of finding
With the chains that bind your feet

Belonging or longing
For a few empty hours
In a stranger's bed
To chase away
A fear that's in your head

And why this weakness
No-one knows
The vacant faceless voices on the phone
Bring words that offer no
Consolation when you're on your own

Beaten on the brow of history
A unison forged in slavery
In all that's hope and decency
A hope for you and a hope for me
For every woman, child and man
To those who'll chain you if they can
The babe you're bouncing on your knee
Needs your help now
Can't you see

Beaten on the brow of history
A union forged in slavery
In all that's hope and decency
A hope for you and a hope for me
For every woman child and man
To those who'll chain you if they can
The babe you're bouncing on your knee
Needs your help now can't you see

    General Comment

    According to Mark:

"I'd always had a dim view about the way women were treated in our culture, especially within the traditional British working class marriage. These lyrics were really dedicated to my mother. Again we had half the song sorted but didn't know where to go with the end. As usual we played the new song at a gig in Berlin and we were all wondering what would happen when we got to the end. Having an audience staring at you is great motivation for artistic block and when the end came, we just made it up as we went along. Fortunately the sound engineer recorded the gig and we were able to reference it when we came to record the album."

    Excellent song. Very passionate.

    My Interpretation

The song is a commentary on the human condition and the challenges that people face when navigating through life. People often struggle to distinguish truth from lies, and this confusion is made worse when they are overcome by desire. The metaphor of the sun in your eyes represents the difficulty of seeing things clearly and being able to make the right decisions when someone is blinded by their own emotions. It also touches on themes of bondage, weakness, and the need for hope and decency.

"A voluntary bondage that always appeals, it's how you make the garden grow" People are often drawn to situations that are not good for them, but that they find pleasure in the struggle. The lyrics also highlight the sense of hopelessness that many people feel in the face of adversity, but they also emphasize the need for people to help one another and work together to make the world a better place.

"For every woman child and man, to those who'll chain you if they can, the babe you're bouncing on your knee needs your help now can't you see" emphasizes the need for people to be aware of the struggles of others and to work to make the world a better place for everyone.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
