"The Idea of You" as written by Mark Christopher Batson, David John Matthews, Boyd C. Tinsley, Leroi H. Moore, Carter A. Beauford and Stefan K. Lessard....
I saw you walk
You know you say
Like a ghost you know to me babe
Come back boots make you look slick
Oh now I see you walk home from school
You got so lost on the way
You got me feeling like a kid
But this man is no kid you know
So I'm not goin pull your hair

I fall so hard inside the idea of you
That's why with you can't say what I mean
Wanna to stay but I think I'm gettin outta here
I fall so hard inside the idea of you

Aw there you go again
Oh I don't know
And I see you walk past with your friends
Aw and I saw you laugh and whisper
And I I'll talk I want you here
But you turn back and smile at me
Aw you got me feeling ok with that
So I'm not goin pull your hair

I fall so hard inside the idea of you
That's why with you can't say what I mean
Wanna to stay but I think I'm gettin outta here
I fall so hard inside the idea of you

Bus stop dreamer
The late night
You with me
There's something moving
You can't stop, saying that you love me
You love me, you love me
Enough, enough you make me shy
But baby, I wake up

I saw you

I fall so hard inside the idea of you
That's why with you can't say what I mean
Wanna to stay but I think I'm gettin outta here
I fall so hard inside the idea of you

Oh it's so go on baby say it

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah

We're laughin

General CommentI like this version. He's said some pretty sketchy things, though (in other versions this tour):

"I'm too old to be sitting here, but I'm not going to pull your hair."

"Wish I could clean out my head. / What if you could read what's inside my head, you'd run screaming away... but I'm no danger my friend."

"Wish we lived long, long ago, so I'd get away with loving you this much."

    Sounds like a pedophile.

General Commentgreen mile, this song is not about dave being a child molestor. Its more about an older man who has never experienced love before. He sees a woman and watches her at the bus stop and wonders what it would be like to love her. Since he has never experienced love, he resorts to childlike signs of emotion such as pulling her hair etc.. you've got me feeling like a kid

General CommentDave has finalized the lyrics to this song, now from the point of view from him as a child having a crush on his babysitter.

Earlier version from '06 are clearly from the point of view of an older man having a crush on a much younger girl.

In fact, in Dave's description in his past two shows about it being about his babysitter, he's said... "It all came true", and "Who would've known".

Take that with the current lyric, "One day you're gonna fall for me.", tells me that he's saying "who would've known" that it finally came true. His dream came true. The young babysitter finally has the crush on HIM. But guess what, he's 40 years old now, and it's pretty creepy having a crush on a teenager when you're 40.

So, you can see that although the perspective of the song has changed, it's basically about the same thing. Dave trying to deal with the little girls that are falling for him now. He still has the crush of his childhood, where the infatuation began.

But come on, he's a rockstar, give him a break.

General CommentWhat's the point of putting this lyric up? The song isn't finished yet. The words will change until they're finalized.

A better place for these would be this site:

General Commentonce again another Dave song involving total infatuation. his best lyrical works revolve around this subject. i love this song and i love how he changed the lyrics even throughout the tour. if the up and coming dave album(there will be one mark my words) has works of this caliber i think we'll be seeing a revival of 90's dave matthews.
