You and I, holding hands
hoping all will go as planned
I held you tight 'till the stroke of midnight
When I felt I had to let you know
That this wont last forever
From the ocean to the sand
Just let me take your hand
May this be our finest memory
Now its a yea from when we met
and I havent forgot you yet
May this be our final memory

And our hearts were soaked with sun
Lets just lie and say the year was fun
This'll be our holiday
It's just one more night I need
To sing you this symphony

Hey, together we can watch the sun rise
together we can leave the world behind
Hey, I can tell from that look in your eyes
that we should pretend like theres something left to find

You and I, standing still
Someday I know we will be
Something more than just a memory
We made plans to meet beneath the moonlight
when I felt I had to you that
this wont be our last kiss
from the stars to the empty shore
I'll be forever yours
may this be our finest memory
you've got me suspended and you wont let me down
Suspension makes such a sorrowed sound
may this be our final memory

And our hearts were soaked with sun
Lets just lie and say the year was fun
This'll be our holiday
It's just one more night I need
To sing you this symphony

Hey, together we can watch the sun rise
together we can leave the world behind
Hey, I can tell from that look in your eyes
that we should pretend like theres something left to find

You and I, walking fast
I'll do my best to make this moment last
We dance as one underneath the streetlight
I hope you know I'll never let you go
I wont leave this way again
From the country to the coast
Summers what i need the most
may this be our finest memory
and with you finally by my side
i know how it feels to be alive
may this be our final memory

And our hearts were soaked with sun
Lets just lie and say the year was fun
This'll be our holiday
It's just one more night I need
To sing you this symphony

Hey, together we can watch the sun rise
together we can leave the world behind
Hey, I can tell from that look in your eyes
that we should pretend like theres something left to find

the summer heats the asphalt on the street
and the waves crash down upon the shore
are you sure its for the best?
theres sunburn still left on my skin
and it'll never fade away
it'll never fade away
you'll never fade away

And our hearts were soaked with sun
Lets just lie and say the year was fun
This'll be our holiday
It's just one more night I need
To sing you this symphony

Hey, can you feel the breeze among the trees
as it brings you to your knees
hey, together we can watch the sun rise
together we can just leave this world behind
hey, theres sunburn still left on my skin
and maybe, just maybe
this can begin
this can begin

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
