Flexible Flyer Lyrics
Down on my flexible flyer
To the bottom how fast i would go
Just waiting for me under the tree
And out in the snow
A cowboy, a nurse or a fireman
There's so many things that you can be
You can set bigger goals, but set your soul
Yeah, set your soul free
Times, places and situations
Lead to an early grave
When we get there we see
Just what did we save?
If your heart is a flame burning brightly
You'll have light and you'll never be cold
And soon you will know that you just grow
You're not growing old
If the wheels of your wagon are rusty
You can paint them until they are new
You can roll down a hill, but if you can't
Then i pity you
To the bottom how fast i would go
Just waiting for me under the tree
And out in the snow
There's so many things that you can be
You can set bigger goals, but set your soul
Yeah, set your soul free
Lead to an early grave
When we get there we see
Just what did we save?
You'll have light and you'll never be cold
And soon you will know that you just grow
You're not growing old
You can paint them until they are new
You can roll down a hill, but if you can't
Then i pity you

I think this is the most affecting lyric Hart ever wrote. Note how he appears to be addressing both a child and an adult at the same time; the song becomes both a warning and a lament.
Now 26 years after I first heard this song, I hope that I'm still growing and not just growing old.

For a long time I didn't know a Flexible Flyer was a sled. (I'm from Australia and we don't get snow at winter except on the highest mountains, which are a trip away from the cities).
This is one of my beautiful, gentle Grant Hart songs.
Does anyone think this song is referring to the sled Rosebud and the hoarder Citizen Kane with the verse:
Times, places and situations Lead to an early grave When we get there we see Just what did we save?
