(This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. I find this song refreshing in that it's not as seething and serious as some of the other alpha couple songs; it's got some humor in it. The subplot that she owes $8,000, the "olly-olly-olly oxen free", etc. His laughing at the end always cracks me up haha.
This song made me actually laugh out loud when I heard it, especially the "if it helps to jog your memory" part. Then I stopped to imagine someone actually beating down the door to get his money back and it's actually quite terrifying. I love the contrast of the humorous lyrics &cheerful melody with what is actually happening in the song.
