i think the word 'missing' works in pretty much the same way. it could mean being lost or well, realizing that something/someone is lost.
basically, i think the song is the 'looking back' type. 'The gem in the soda, the moneylender who wasn't there, the slightly bent knife, the hairband with wings' these might seem too random to anyone else, but i am guessing it stands for certain memorable events to ellegarden.
