The sun will set tonight
The sun will set

It's a midnight swim
Where it is late and the air is all clear
And I remember that evenin', you on the floor
I was attached to the ceiling

Look behind the glass in your mouth
These words I am due for

The sun will set tonight
Under the lonely dreamers
(Lonely dreamers)
Only to rise again
So we can start it over
(We'll start it again)

And you were right
When you whispered in my ear
And it all became so clear
It's gonna be alright
(Alright)
Everything will be alright
Even if, even if the city ignites

Look behind the glass in your mouth
These words I am due for

The sun will set tonight
Under the lonely dreamers
(Lonely dreamers)
Only to rise again
So we can start it over
(We'll start it again)

Now to get back to
The home where there's windows
As large as the city below
Now to get back to
The home where there's windows
As large as the city below

Bring me down to the safe
Unlock all the pain, until then

The sun will set tonight
Under the lonely dreamers
(Lonely dreamers)
Only to rise again
So we can start it over
We'll start it again

So we can start it over
We'll start it again
So we can start it over
We'll start it again
The sun will set tonight

some beautiful imagery in this song i love it for some reason it makes me think of someone forgiving someone, no matter what the consequences of w/e u did wrong are. prob cos of the line "everything will be alrite even if the city ignites" and "well start it again so we can start it over" i think this is basicly a thank you note to someone for forgiving them... IMO

Midnight Swim is about chasing your dreams. Brock says that he lives in a country (USA) where you can make your dreams come true. That's what the song is about. If you want to achieve something bad enough, you can do it. The sun sets on all the lonely dreamers, who, once the sun has risen again, can make their dreams reality.

i agree with shadowsilence, i think that this song is about forgiveness. At the start of the song it seems like the two people are really distant "you on the floor, i was so attached to the ceiling.." and that whatever is being said between them is really nasty "the glass in your mouth". But as the song goes on, the relationship begins to seem more positive "you whispered in my ear" (a sign of closeness?) and "everything will be alright, even if the city ignites" which to me means whatever happens now, we'll be ok.. Just another opinion :)

I interpret this song as a struggle between a couple, one of said couple is an addict, hence the line, "And I remember that evening, you on the floor, I was attached to the ceiling." Which to me says, I was so high, while you layed sober "Look behind, the glass in your mouth, is what I am due for." I look back at what I've done, the hurtful things you've said, is what I deserve. And the rest of the song goes on to say. Well be together forever, regardless of what happens or what vies towards destroying us.

Am i the only one who thinks of hanging yourself when it says "i was attached to the ceiling"?

This song rmeinds me of just hanging out all night with friends you can't get mad at or be angry with no matter hwat... and whatever anyone does you can just let it go and forgive them because you love them so much.

I see 'attached to the ceiling' as laying down just staring at it with blank eyes... I do it alot, and just think about everything.

lol this song pisses me off because i cant figure out what it means I see both the ideas presented above (except the chasing ur dreams one)as being valid in some places but invalid in others ...

the addict version seems pretty legit but the last 2 lines just throw that off .. unless the well start it again could mean he slips again and does whatever drug and then they ahve to start from square one in the detox ... and also the chorus doenst fit ? why are they lonely dreamers if one does drugs and the oher is trying to get him off? ...

the forgiveness one it seems to make sense because as explained with the one on the floor and other on the cieling and the glass in the mouth, the rest jsut kinda seems like reaching and trying to make the lyrics fit.... ...

When I first herd it (without looking at the lyrics) I felt like it was about a car crash (much like some of their other music). Like they snuck out for a midnight swim and ended up in a car crash. After the car crash the one being on the floor and the oher on the ceiling would just be how they were positioned after the crash ... .and looking behind "the glass in your mouth" i thought just meant glass from the crash and this "looking behind" would just mean forgiving him for the car crash, and he feels entitled to this forgiveness when he says he is "due for" it jsut after. I feel like the "everything is going to be all right, even if hte city ignites" could have been her saying right after the crash that even if she died because of the crash it would be all right ... like she would forgive him .. (i feel like he said the city ignites just because its such a crazy situation that she would die on this simple midnight swim trip it would be like if his whole world burst into flames (ignited)) ... some i wasnt to sure about .. but having been in many hospital rooms ive noticed that their windows are gigantic so that may fit the "and now to get back to the room where theres windows as large as the city below" . Because after the crash they must head to the hospital ... and then as the chorus says the sun will set on them but it will rise again only for them to start over (hoping that they both survive and can get back up and give it another go tomorow) ... (sorry about the spelling .. its late)

... like I said my opinion came from before I read the lyrics so its prob wrong but i figured id put it out there in case anyone found interest in it

My interpretation of this song is a discussion with himself or a friend. "even if the city ignites" is basically saying that everything will be ok even when a new day comes. If you look at a city or town from the hills or some elevation at sunrise, the city looks like its igniting like a candle, brought from slumber. "you on the floor i was attached to the ceiling". The first person is looking at things pessimistically/realistically and not dreaming, i assume "the ceiling" is the sky which would go to say that his head is in the clouds or dreaming. I have to agree a bit with ::Drummer::because it is about chasing your dreams and pushing forward day by day.

Holiday

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
