Please don't let this turn into something it's not
I can only give you everything I've got
I can't be as sorry as you think I should
But I still love you more than anyone else could

All that I keep thinking throughout this whole flight
Is it could take my whole damn life to make this right
This splintered mast I'm holding on won't save me long
Because I know fine well that what I did was wrong

The last girl and the last reason to make this last for as long as I could
First kiss and the first time that I felt connected to anything
The weight of water, the way you told me to look past everything I had ever learned
The final word in the final sentence you ever uttered to me was love

We have got through so much worse than this before
What's so different this time that you can't ignore?
You say it is much more than just my last mistake
And we should spend some time apart for both our sakes

The last girl and the last reason to make this last for as long as I could
First kiss and the first time that I felt connected to anything
The weight of water, the way you told me to look past everything I had ever learned
The final word in the final sentence you ever uttered to me was love

The last girl and the last reason to make this last for as long as I could
First kiss and the first time that I felt connected to anything
The weight of water, the way you told me to look past everything I had ever learned
The final word in the final sentence you ever uttered to me was love

And I don't know where to look
My words just break and melt
Please just save me from this darkness
Please just save me from this darkness

And I don't know where to look
My words just break and melt
Please just save me from this darkness
Please just save me from this darkness

    My Interpretation

Oh, this is my favourite snow patrol song. It's so haunting. i think the song is the whole, not knowing what you had till it was gone. I think the lyrics represent the break up stage and aftermath for the singer.

'Please don't let this turn into something it's not I can only give you everything I've got I can't be as sorry as you think I should But I still love you more than anyone else could'

This is the moment of the end of the relationship and he's on the defensive because he made a mistake in the relationship, probably cheating on her. He's being an ass, telling her , so i cheated, i don't want that to break us up. it's done and dusted lets move on. He's being flippant because he doesn't realise that she's had enough. no more second chances.

'All that I keep thinking throughout this whole flight Is 'it could take my whole damn life to make this right' This splintered mast I'm holding on won't save me long Because I know fine well that what I did was wrong'

He knows he's screwed up royally but he doesn't want to believe it. He wants it to be easy. i forgive you baby ,ok we'll forget this ever happened.

He doesn't want to take responsibility because he'll realise how much he hurt her. The 'splintered mast' bit i think, means that what he did to her is going to hit him eventually and there will be nowhere to run.

'The last girl in the last reason to make this last for as long as I could First kiss and the first time that I felt connected to anything The weight of water, the way you taught me to look past everything I had ever learned The final word in the final sentence you ever uttered to me was love'

some time has passed days/weeks and he's looking back over the whole mess he made. he's thinking of when he cheated her and lost her

'The last girl in the last reason to make this last for as long as I could' he's saying that when he was with the last girl he realises that the relationship that he had with his girlfriend meant more because it was love not lust.

his girlfriend brought out the best in him. He's remembering the first moment that they had, He's holding onto that because thats all he has left. His girlfriend told him that she loves/loved him at the very end and that haunts him.

'We have got through so much worse than this before What's so different this time that you can't ignore? You say it is much more than just my last mistake And we should spend some time apart for both our sakes'

He's talking to her after the breakup and he's saying to her and himself we've been through times worse than this. why can't we fix this and be together again.

she's telling him that he messes up and she's the one that hurts for it, he screws up and screws her up and she needs time. she still loves him because she's put them on a break and not ended it completely.

'And I don't know where to look My words just break and melt Please just save me from this darkness Please just save me from this darkness'

He's depressed and longing for her. He's still pleading with her to forgive him but he's getting nowhere.

I don't know if anyone agrees with me but the way the music is arranged in the song tells me, that when he's singing certain verses to her, that's the calm before the storm, and then the music starts to crescendo again like it's building to something, Like he's in a race against time to get the relationship back.

and then it lulls again to the pleading, and crescendo's again and then eventually fades out to his depression and longing for her. It's really clever, It makes you feel the desperation of the perpatrator in the relationship xxxxx

Oh, and it sounds to me like he's saying "First kiss and the first time that I felt connected to anything The weight of water, the way you taught me to look past everything I had ever learned The final word in the final sentence you ever uttered to me was love".

Definitely about holding onto a thin strand of hope. I love how that hope materializes at the end, when the chords shift from minor to major and he says, "please just save me from this darkness". It's almost palpable at that instant.

in my opinion, i think that he just means the last girl he was with, and the last reason is him cheating, the lasting long bit is the way he feels after - ashamed but he can't help it, and keeps doing it.

that's my take on it anyways!

    My Interpretation

This song is definitely about true love which was only one-sided. She feels like she isn't getting something she needs from him, so she moves on, but even if he can't show it, he knows he loves her far beyond anything else.

"Please don't let this turn into something it's not I can only give you everything I've got I can't be as sorry as you think I should But I still love you more than anyone else could"

Basically what I said above, and the idea that he did something to hurt her but he doesn't fully regret it. Either that, or he just can't apologize for loving her so much.

"All that I keep thinking throughout this whole flight Is 'it could take my whole damn life to make this right' This splintered mast I'm holding on won't save me long Because I know fine well that what I did was wrong"

He sees she's going to end the relationship, but he keeps hanging on to the sinking ship.

"The last girl in the last reason to make this last for as long as I could First kiss and the first time that I felt connected to anything The weight of water, the way you taught me to look past everything I had ever learned The final word in the final sentence you ever uttered to me was love"

She was his last hope - and perhaps his first love (from a long time ago). She changed him, but then she left him, and now he's saddened and hasn't a clue what to do without her.

"We have got through so much worse than this before What's so different this time that you can't ignore? You say it is much more than just my last mistake And we should spend some time apart for both our sakes"

He keeps begging for another chance, but she's done with him. She tries to be kind about the break-up, but the "kind words" perhaps hurt him even more. He knows the "time apart" is meant to mean "forever."

"The last girl in the last reason to make this last for as long as I could First kiss and the first time that I felt connected to anything The weight of water, the way you taught me to look past everything I had ever learned The final word in the final sentence you ever uttered to me was love

The last girl in the last reason to make this last for as long as I could First kiss and the first time that I felt connected to anything The weight of water, the way you taught me to look past everything I had ever learned The final word in the final sentence you ever uttered to me was love"

same as above, repeated to show emphasis as he breaks down

"And I don't know where to look My words just break and melt Please just save me from this darkness Please just save me from this darkness"

Pretty straightforward. He knows for certain now that the relationship is over, but he has nothing to look forward to in his life anymore. He's just an empty shell who wants to give up on love but unfortunately cannot.

This song is sad and beautiful and very spot on one of my past relationships. My favourite part is the chorus - 'First kiss and the first time that I felt connected to anything. The weight of water, the way you taught me to look past everything I had ever learned' - someone who means so much to you and has truly changed the way you look at life. And then 'The final word in the final sentence you ever uttered to me was love' I think this refers to the last conversation you have with someone before you tell them something that completely destroys what you have. Being told by them that they love you only to break it. Knowing that you could love them 'more than anyone else could' and simultaneously knowing that it's over, that you could spend the whole of your life trying to make up for something but essentially it's just a fantasy now. Its about being greatful for someone who has changed your life for the better - he knows it finished, but still wishes with all his heart that he could make it go on forever. That is my interpretation anyway but perhaps I am just trying to make it fit into my life like I do too many songs!

You beat me to it! Haha, I was just coming here to post the lyrics to this song.

Anyway in terms of the song meaning, sounds to me like the narrator's in a relationship that's going through some problems, and he and his girlfriend are going to take a break to try and figure things out, and this song is him saying that he wants the relationship to go on forever.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
