One night to you
Lasted six weeks for me
Just a bitter little pill now
Just to try to go to sleep
No more waking up to innocence
Say hello to hesitance
To everyone I meet
Thanks to you years ago
I guess I'll never know
What love means to me but oh
I'll keep on rolling down this road
But I've got a bad, bad feeling

[Chorus]
It's gonna take a long time to love
It's gonna take a lot to hold on
It's gonna be a long way to happy, yeah
Left in the pieces that you broke me into
Torn apart but now I've got to
Keep on rolling like a stone
Cause it's gonna be a long long way to happy

Left my childhood behind
In a roll away bed
Everything was so damn simple
Now I'm losing my head
Trying to cover up the damage
And pad out all the bruises
Do you know I had it
So it didn't hurt to lose it
Didn't hurt to lose it
No but oh
I'll keep on rolling down this road
But I've got a bad, bad feeling

[Chorus]

Now I'm numb as hell and I can't feel a thing
But don't worry about regret or guilt cause I never knew your name
I just want to thank you
Thank you
From the bottom of my heart
For all the sleepless nights
And for tearing me apart yeah yeah

[Chorus: x2]

People...its about rape. Its in an interview and all. So with all do respect, people who are saying its about a one night stand....its not.

“one night to you lasted six weeks for me” Meaning the attack happend one night, but for the victim, it dragged out and seemed like 6 weeks. It doesnt mean to think of it for 6 weeks...it takes longer then 6 weeks to get over something like that.

“just a bitter little pill now just to try to go to sleep” NOTHING to do with pregnancies...its a sleeping pill!

“But don’t worry about regret or guilt, I never knew your name. I just want to thank you, Thank you. From the bottom of my heart. For all the sleepless nights and for tearing me apart”

sarcasticaly thanking him for all the cr#*p he put her through.

So anyway...i could say the meaning to every line, but honestly Sally14 pretty much summed it up perfectly. But easily my favorite by miles. I speak from experience anway. I LOVE P!nks music. Thankyou 4 this song pink.

This song is about someone being raped. The first line 'One night to you, lasted six weeks for me' is saying that it may have only been one night, but to her, it lasted almost forever.

(If you think about it, the girl who gets raped is young, so six weeks is a while for her)

'A bitter little pill now, just to try to go to sleep' means that she can't get to sleep because of it, and she take a pill to do so.

'No more waking up to innocence Say hello to hesitance To everyone I meet'

This means that she can never wake up and be that innocent person she was. And that when she meets people she hesitates, because either she doesn't know if she can trust them, or she feels bad about what happened to her and feels uncomfortable around people.

'Thanks to you years ago I guess I'll never know What love means to me,but oh I'll keep on rolling down this road But I've got a bad, bad feeling'

This means that because of him (rapist), years ago when she was raped, she now can never truly have love, because being with a man will scare her, and she'll never truly want to be in a relationship. But, even though she feels this way, she'll keep going through life ('I'll keep rolling down ths road'), even though she will always have that memory of being raped, and that feeling that everyone knows and is judging her for it.

The chorus is her saying that she is going to take a long time to tust people again, and even though someone has hurt her, she will keep going, because even though it will take a long time, she wants to be happy again.

'Left my childhood behind In a roll away bed Everything was so damn simple Now I'm losing my head'

This is going over that she lost her childhood in a rollaway bed. Meaning, she lost her innocence (virginity) in a cheap bed and before it happened, everything was simple and happy, but now, after the experience, she can't think straight, and it's killing her inside.

'Trying to cover up the damage And pad out all the bruises Do you know I had it So it didn't hurt to lose it Didn't hurt to lose it'

Okay, firstly, this verse is all screwed up... It's meant to be... 'Trying to cover up the damage, and pad out all the bruises. To young to know I had it, so it didn't hurt to lose it Didn't hurt to lose it'

Interpretation: She doesn't want anyone to knwo it happened, so she's trying to cover it up by pretending it didn't happen, or hiding the scars. Also, with the too young part, she's saying that she was too young to know about virginity and when she lost it, she didn't know she was losing something she could never get back, so it didn't hurt then.

'Now I'm numb as hell and I can't feel a thing But don't worry about regret or guilt cause I never knew your name I just want to thank you Thank you From the bottem of my heart For all the sleepless nights And for tearing me apart yeah yeah'

She's basically saying that she can't feel anything, like love or anything like that, because of what happened. But she doesn't believe he is guilty, because he didn't know her, and she didn't believe he knew her. Also, this is another good sign of rape, because the two don't know each other, and so it was a sudden thing, not to be repeated. Also, with the thanking, she is having a moment of sarcasm and is telling whoever did it that he destroyed her life and she will never forgive him. (Makes sense?)

Thats my interpretation, and if you have any comments, don't hesitate to reply. I like to get feedback.

A correction for this part "And pad out all the bruises Do you know I had it"

It is supposed to be " and pat out all the bruises, too young to know I had it."

And now my interpretation: In my own personal opinion I think maybe she was talking about a young woman who gave of her innocence, or in other words her virginity, to a uy she never know or maybe was raped. It could mean both, but it talks about her struggle to keep going and trying to be happy with herself again. And she hates how much pain she has been put through, so now after years of hurt she's finally going to put it behind and try to, slowly, find someone who will love her and who she will be happy and can trust to never hurt her. But thats just my opinion on this song. All in all a great song.

Yeah you're pretty much right. It's about a girl whos raped (maybe at a young age)and knows that it's going to be a long time until she can trust and accept people.

    Also she gets pregnent (sp?)

In my opinion.. I think that she wasn't rape..she did that because she wanted..when she says "Everything was so damn simple, Now i'm losing my head"I guess that she says that she knew very well what she was doing...But you know..sometimes it happens and we can't control it...

This line makes me think of her going to the hospital: "Left my childhood behind in a roll away bed" and this line makes me think of either grief and regret, like a severe kind or pregnancy: "One night to you lasted six weeks for me"... whatever happened it was something that really traumatized her afriad to love for a while so she's gotta' heal and keep on living so she can make it to the day when she's happy again.

I think it might be about yes not a rape i think but maybe like a very big mistake...and a posibility of pregnancy...who knows...it might then again be about anything at all

I really love this song, i think it's the best on her album. It's open to so many meanings but the way it says you cant get over grief easily and that it's 'gonna be a long way to happy' makes me feel like i'm not the only one who needs to take time to myself. Great song, great album! Amazing solo artist!! Keep it up!!

I think this song is definately about a one night stand that really affected whoever the song itself is about, or even being raped, and how its going to take a long time to recover and learn to trust someone again. The lyrics pretty much speak for themselves. Its a really emotional song, and really powerful.

Did this girl in the song had an abortion or something like that??..mmh, I dunno, I thought about that because of this phrase, i think is one of the most memorable ones in the song: "One night to you Lasted six weeks for me"

    and then the next lines...

"Just a bitter little pill now Just to try to go to sleep"...

well, even though I think 6 weeks is a very short time, I'm not sure...if someone happens to know this, please tell me. Thanks

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
