In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."

This song is amazing, it tells the straight up truth that most christian bands don't confront. That we're not alright, and the only way we will be alright is with God.
this song is amazing. seriously.. but to me.. it doesnt really have anything with God. i think that the firewall... is just an imagenary wall that everyone puts up sometimes, to block people from getting to their heart. i know i do that. i think this song has to deal with loving a person.. & that they lost that person & with out them they aren't alright. this song is true in someway for almost everyone in the world.. how can it not be? we all go through some kind of pain.. & sometimes their is one person you would do ANYTHING for... he's confessing the truth in all of us.. its just a different truth for different people... it doesnt necassarily have to be about God.
Thsie song means that you'r never alright where you are with God,and how you should always be pressing on to get closer to God.
I think that this song is more of a confession. It's almost like he is telling the world, "I may look like I'm doing alright, but I'm really not." It's all about forgetting the things in the world and realizing that we need to get closer to God. I feel this way a lot. These lyrics are amazing, along with the whole new cd.

Its about haw when we are at our lowest the only way out is to see that we are in need of god as we are "broken" without him.
Its a slap round the face for christians who are loosing there contact with god. makes you realise. that your slipping.

It's not really emo at all. What I got from the song was that everybody is a broken person inside; nobody really has it all together, but in order to be "cool" in the eyes of others we try to hide our weakness. (It's "a wound that no ones wants to speak of".) So for example, the firewall he feels safe behind is that veil of coolness he hides behind around people.<br /> <br /> I don't think they were confronting any specific issue like drugs or harming yourself, they're just encouraging people to drop their facade and be themselves for God. :)
Well, Lemming, I agree with you on just about everything. However, I don't think you're correct in the assumption that the firewall = God. I think it's more a man-made shield(like a firewall in a car) that "protects." The song then continues with "I'm not alright" so if he was in fact safe behind God already, why would he be "not alright"?
I think that he is talking about coming out from behind his own barriers having God burn them down, revealing everything and healing him.

I've been thinking about it all day, and i can't quite figure it out.
First look at the line before it that goes "If weakness is a wound, no one wants to speak of." From what I can understand, its saying we all have problems, but for the most part keep them secret. Using this knowledge, the line "then cool is just how far we have to fall" could mean that our reputation (cool) is what is holding us back from confessing, because what we hide might lower others opinions of us. I think this song could be about someone who is portrayed as always being a happy person and no matter what happens they'll be fine but really that person gets emotional sometimes and isn't alright when some things happen and that person is confessing this to someone.
this song is, in fact, about God...after struggling through many difficult times, the band grew much closer to God and realized that it's ok to say that they were not alright.
i feel like this all of the time in my spiritual struggles of daily life, and I absolutely love Sanctus Real for writing this song because it hits so hard on the truth of life and emotions.
