Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
So here we are again
The same fork in the road
I hate you, you love me
This story's getting old
The day that I opened up
You shut me out for good
Forgive, forget, fuck you
You are a liar and a whore
So take what you want and leave
You'll never get another part of
I remember the day that
I thought I would be free
I poured out my soul to you
Exposed everything
I take it out
My heart's broke
My hand is much the same
I did my best to drink you away
So take what you want and leave
You'll never get another part of
You are poison on man's lips
Lured in by the curves of your hips
Come here boy, stand by me
Look my way, have another drink
I should have got up
I should have got up and left you
And I will never ever be your lover again
As far as I'm concerned, we are not even friends
This may not seem to subtle to you
The point I'm trying to make is we are completely through
So take what you want and leave
You'll never get another part of
You are poison on man's lips
Lured in by the curves of your hips
Come here boy, stand by me
Look my way, have another drink
The same fork in the road
I hate you, you love me
This story's getting old
The day that I opened up
You shut me out for good
Forgive, forget, fuck you
You are a liar and a whore
So take what you want and leave

I poured out my soul to you
Exposed everything

My heart's broke
My hand is much the same
I did my best to drink you away
So take what you want and leave
You'll never get another part of
You are poison on man's lips

Come here boy, stand by me

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
I really love the song musically, but the lyrics are so fucking overdone and cliched.
"I hate you. You love me."
"You are a liar and a whore"
"And I will never ever be you're lover again As far as I’m concerned, we are not even friends"
Overly simplistic and childish if you ask me. Perhaps they will just succumb to sobbing into the mic next time?
I guess this is what happens when you listen to Cradle of Filth. I feel Alex could benefit from a degree in English Lit like Dani has.
I can write better than this.
i think the breakdown when alex is screaming while you hear brandon vocalizing is the best part of the whole song. not to mention the lyrics which i think are great.
I think this song isn't cliché at all.
With "emo" music bleeding into (what seems) every genre of music, it's nice to have a song that's just a loud, striped down "FUCK YOU" instead of putting all kinds of emotions into complicated (annoying) metaphors.
not sure if i have the lyrics 100% right, but i believe i'm pretty close... one of the better songs on the new album if you ask me..
This is an amazing song.
Best song on thenew album along with Creature. The riff is amazing, as is the solo. Brilliant lyrics too. One little correction:
"Suddle" = "Subtle
Otherwise these are pretty damn good
i'm waiting for the album to come out and buy it instead of downloading it off limewire.
i would have to say in my own opinion this is probly atreyu's best song ever the lyrics rock the breakdown is great and the instuments fit the song perfect and solo is just awsome
I love the solo, great breakup song.
What a tite song! A definate fuck you to a bitch who can't make up her mind, puts you through hell, and then wants "in" again. I love the part where he tells the boy to look his way and have another drink... He's probably saying that to another dude she fucked over or tellin that dude to leave her (like he should've) and have a drink with him (to save the pain and drink her away now when its not so hard to let go).
