Sunny Goodge Street Lyrics

On the firefly platform on sunny Goodge Street
Violent hash-smoker shook a chocolate machine
Bobbed in an eating scene.

Smashing into neon streets in their stillness
Smearing their eyes on the crazy Kali goddess
Listenin' to sounds of Mingus mellow fantastic.

"My, my", they sigh,
"My, my", they sigh.

In dull house rooms with coloured lights swingin'
Strange music boxes sadly tinklin'
Drink in the sun shining all around you.

"My, my", they sigh,
"My, my", they sigh, mm mm.

"My, my", they sigh,
"My, my", they sigh.

The magician, he sparkles in satin and velvet,
You gaze at his splendour with eyes you've not used yet.
I tell you his name is Love, Love, Love.

"My, my", they sigh,
"My, my", they sigh.
"My, my" - sigh

This song is so good. No interpretations?

Sure. It's about being loaded.

A good, evocative and accurate description of the innocent use in the 60s. It was a sort of first communion with the cosmos, it seemed like.

Oh, well!

first :D

this song is great! mabey my favorate from him.

anyway, i always thought on the third line it was "Envoled in an eating scene" idk though. mabey it just im usualy stoned while i listen to this, so i can realate to an eating scene :P

@tim caesar I took it to be "Involved in an eating scene..."

It's an interesting image...

A guy obviously stoned on cannabis ("violent hash eater") has maybe used a candy vending machine, wanting to indulge in some gustatory sensations--and you know how good everything tasted stoned,

But the machine fails to deliver--it eats his coins--and he's shaking it, bitterly disappointed.

This came out in '65 I'm thinking and I smoked dope for the first time that year. Before I smoked the lyric implied one thing; after, it seemed real clear to me.

ooops... wasnt first sry

anyway this song makes me think about a group of stoners just chilling out and trippin

Mingus mellow fantastic - Charles Mingus it a jazz bassist/ composer from the 50's/60's(/70's?). guess Donovan liked him.

When I first heard this on vinyl I thought the chorus went : "My Mindless Eye".

My Interpretation

The song is about getting stoned. Goodge Street is the London tube station where he picks up his hash. From then on ii's a lovely trip.

@david11715

Absolutely right, in my opinion.

Anyone who doesn't understand about "a violent HASH eater shook a chocolate machine" really wan't there, figuratively.

All the additional imagery is like a strong marijuana high, or hash.
