I thought I read an interview with Trish Keenan saying she mostly wrote the lyrics for this album as cut-ups, that is, by just mixing and matching words she found in a newspaper or something. I love "awkwardness happening to someone you love." That's really funny.

"curiouser and curiouser" is a reference to alice in wonderland, and the black cat...could be the cheshire cat? makes sense to me.
No idea what she's reffering to but I like this song alot. This was the first song I ever heard by Broadcast. I bought the album Tender Buttons the same week.

To me this song is about being a beautifully quirky sort of social butterfly who floats among many different kinds of friends. Trying to reach out to people or someone on a deeper level. Dipping their toes in the water but not really feeling they've got it down completely, or fit in the same way everyone else does. Wanting to, maybe even bluffing confidence a little. Experimenting with deeper connections. Hiding that they're a little fluttered or anxious inside. Feeling a little awkward or unlucky but never giving up because they want to know the ones they care about deeper. They're curious.
