The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Juno was mad, he knew he'd been had
So he shot at the sun with a gun
Shot at the sun with a gun
Shot at his wily one only friend
In the gallows or the ghetto
In the town or the meadow
In the billows even over the sun
Every end of a time is another begun
You understand mechanical hands
Are the ruler of everything (ah)
Ruler of everything (ah)
I'm the ruler of everything in the end
Do you like how I dance? I've got zirconium pants
Consequential enough to slip you into a trance
Do you like how I walk? Do you like how I talk?
Do you like how my face disintegrates into chalk?
I have a wonderful wife, I have a powerful job
She criticizes me for being egocentric
You practice your mannerisms into the wall
If this mirror were clearer, I'd be standing so tall
I saw you slobber over clovers on the side of the hill
I was observing the birds (circle in for the kill)
I've been you, I know you, your facade is a scam
You know you're making me cry, this is the way that I am
I've been living a lie, a metamorphical scheme
Detective undercover, brotherhood, objective, obscene
Oh, no, no, oh yeah
Do you hear the flibbity-jibbity-jibber-jabber
With an, "Oh my God, I've got to get out of here
Or I'll have another word to sell, another story to tell
Another time piece ringing the bell"
Do you hear the clock stop when you reach the end?
No, you know it must be never ending, comprehend if you can
But when you try to pretend to understand
You resemble a fool, although you're only a man
So give it up and smile
Do you hear the flibbity-jibbity-jibber-jabber
With an, "Oh my God, I've got to get out of here
Or I'll have another word to sell, another story to tell
Another time piece ringing the bell"
Do you hear the clock stop when you reach the end?
No, you know it must be never ending, comprehend if you can
But when you try to pretend to understand
You resemble a fool, although you're only a man
So give it up and smile (smile, smile, smile)
You understand mechanical hands
Are the ruler of everything (ah)
Ruler of everything (ah)
I'm the ruler of everything
In the end
Without looking down, gliding around
Like a bumbling dragon, I fly
Scraping my face on the sky
Oh, no, no, oh, yeah
So he shot at the sun with a gun
Shot at the sun with a gun
Shot at his wily one only friend

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"
Son Şansın - Şarkı Sözleri
Hayalperest

This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
Holiday

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Tally Hall! I love you!
Ahh. I love Tally Hall. =D
Mmkay so, "You understand mechanical hands are the ruler of everything" = "Time rules everything" Hands on a clock, that type of thing.
Zirconium = Used to make fake diamonds, while pretty, has no real value.
The deep voice is time, and the higher voice is people. Esp. during "do you like how I walk, do you like how I talk"/"do you like how my face disintergrates into chalk" - Showing ageing.
People are egocentric; we consider ourselves important. We can do things like make money and start families. The material possessions "you" or people in general, surround themselves with, can do nothing against the flow of time.
This is quite a cynical song if you think about it. Haha.

Just so you all know, Tally Hall are going to be huge. HUGE.
@majestikmoose9
Well you are not wrong,
THEY'RE BACK...
sorta
I really hope that they could have become popular when they were still around
i think i should submit some more of their songs. a little greener perhaps
Where is the second verse?
These are the lyrics off the complete demos, the second verse is only on the Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum album
i've been to the museum, seeing as i live not far from it...which is pretty awesome for me because i totally love this band
The second verse is:
In the gallows or the ghetto In the town or the meadow In the billows Even over the sun Every end of a time Is another begun
yup. the current version of the lyrics was taken from Complete Demos
ahem an error in the lyrics if you will.
You practice your mannerisms Into the wall If this mirror were clearer I would see myself fall
At the end instead of "I would see myself fall" it is actually "I'd be standing so tall" listen again.
ps. THIS IS MY FAV SONG ON THEIR ALBUM!!!!!! TALLY HALL IS AWESOME, once they get out more they will be HUGE!!!!
@Amafirly This comment is literally older than me, but I'm pretty sure lots of the "errors" people are commenting actually come from different performances of this song having differing lyrics from the final, more refined version of the song. Pretty cool!
Amazing, I finally understand what mechanical hands is referring to. Fantastic. The cd art makes sense to now.
